Washington (Eurotoday) – American Airlines flights were grounded nationwide on Christmas Eve due to a technical issue, with the FAA implementing a ground stop.
American Airlines flights were grounded “ground stop” by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Christmas Eve morning. The direction came as the airline underwent a technical problem that disrupted functions on 24 Dec 2024. In a statement, American Airlines stated, “Our teams are operating to resolve the problem as quickly as possible, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”
How does a ground stop impact air travel?
In air traffic management, ground stops are among the most restrictive actions. It directs specific aircraft to remain on the ground based on measures such as airport, airspace, or supply limitations. Ground stops are typically executed during severely decreased capacity problems, such as weather disturbances, technical problems, or unexpected events affecting air traffic control services.
Ground stops can be regional, involving facilities within a single zone, or national, affecting flights across the nation. Local ground stops are typically quicker, lasting up to 30 minutes, unless raised with prior approval. National ground stops are employed only after digging less restrictive standards and require coordination between concerned facilities and the FAA.
The course of a ground stop can alter depending on the underlying problem. Once the cause is handled, air traffic control cooperates with the airline to gradually discharge flights calmly to dodge overpowering the system. Preference is often provided to flights with connecting passengers or those that have been postponed the longest. The FAA and the airline continuously observe and modify the process to ensure protection.
