Fighters from the Islamist group Ansar al-Tawhid, identified as foreigners, were involved in the reported incident, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the dominant Islamist faction that led the movement to oust President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, announced that foreign fighters had been detained in connection with the event, as reported by the BBC.
Following the incident, video footage emerged showing a religious leader from HTS symbolically holding up a cross to demonstrate solidarity with the affected community. The leader assured the gathered crowd that the damaged tree would be restored by the next morning.
The demonstrations occurred a little more than two weeks after Assad’s government was overthrown on December 8.
European leaders have described the collapse of Assad’s regime as a “positive development” for Syria. They have pledged to collaborate with the newly established leadership to uphold the rights of Syrians and to prevent the resurgence of terrorism in the region, according to a Politico report.
