Brussels – Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob has expressed optimism that the new American administration under Republican Donald Trump could create an opportunity for a ceasefire in Ukraine, ahead of the European Council meeting in Brussels.
Golob emphasized that discussions regarding peace conditions and the potential deployment of peacekeeping forces should only commence following the establishment of a truce. “I believe these discussions can truly begin only once a ceasefire is in place and we understand the agreements reached by the involved parties. Therefore, it appears premature to engage in this dialogue at this stage,” he remarked.
Once a truce is achieved, Golob asserts that Europe should present Ukraine with a clear path towards European integration, outlining the necessity for tangible steps to incorporate Ukraine into the EU framework.
The prospect of Donald Trump returning to the White House may have implications not only for American support to Ukraine but also for trade dynamics between the US and the EU. Regarding preparations in the EU and Slovenia for a potential Republican presidency, Golob suggested that it would be prudent to wait for the new administration to take office.
