Hasselt (Eurotoday): In Hasselt, six heavy sections of a new bicycle bridge were installed over the Grote Ring, weighing 276 tons. Despite the cold, about sixty people came to watch this project for safer cycling.
Early Saturday morning on 14 December, workers began building the ramp for a new bicycle bridge over the Grote Ring in Hasselt at Elfde-Liniestraat. At the supply site, two people waited outside in the cold. But later, about sixty people arrived to watch the big steel pieces being lifted into place. Zoë Debbaut, a spokesperson for the Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic, mentioned that it’s surprising how many people come to see this. Even with the chilly weather, the project brought out a crowd to see how the bridge was being built.
What engineering challenges were overcome in installing Hasselt’s bicycle bridge ramps?
Six big sections of the ramps were put in place on the outer side of the Grote Ring, close to the trees. These sections weigh 276 tons and help connect the ground paths to the elevated bicycle bridge. They are different lengths to match the slope, but all are 5 meters wide, giving enough space for cyclists and pedestrians. The large size and heavy weight of the ramps make installation difficult.
It has been said that the approach ramps are an important part of the bigger bicycle bridge project, which aims to create a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians across the Grote Ring. The bridge will help cyclists avoid traffic, making it safer and encouraging eco-friendly transportation. Once finished, this bridge will improve travel in Hasselt and show the city’s commitment to building sustainable and innovative infrastructure.

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “safety” for cyclists quite like a 276-ton bridge—because who wouldn’t want their eco-friendly commute to involve a heavy metal concert? 🤷♂️🚴♂️ Let’s just hope the locals don’t start forming a queue for a closer look at the “engineering marvel” while they’re dodging traffic below! 🤦♂️

Oh, brilliant! A 276-ton bicycle bridge in Hasselt—because clearly, cycling safety was just too pedestrian before this marvel of engineering popped up. 🚴♂️ Who knew heavy metal could be so trendy?
