Europe’s AI Competitiveness Depends on Skill Development

EU Leads in Green AI Skills and Responsible Development

Artificial intelligence (AI) professionals in the European Union are setting the standard when it comes to integrating green skills—using AI to contribute to a more environmentally sustainable economy. Currently, 8.1 percent of AI talent in the EU possess at least one green skill, outpacing the 7.4 percent in the UK and 5.8 percent in the US. As many green solutions draw on advanced technological innovations like AI, the combination of these skill sets positions Europe to drive a productive, eco-friendly future.

The EU is also at the forefront of fostering responsible AI, which focuses on the ethical, trustworthy, and safe development and use of AI systems. Among AI professionals in the EU, responsible AI ranks as the eighth-fastest-growing skill—ahead of the global AI average, where it ranks 14th.

Skills Development: The Key to Europe’s Competitiveness

While the US and China are sprinting ahead in AI innovation through heavy investment and the rapid expansion of digital talent, the EU risks being left behind due to a slower adoption of emerging technologies and a significant skills gap. Addressing this challenge is critical to ensuring Europe’s competitiveness in the global AI economy.

To bridge this gap, EU leaders must prioritize a skills-first labor market that provides widespread access to AI literacy and technical training. Unlocking the full potential of Europe’s workforce will require targeted, sector-specific AI upskilling initiatives. This approach will not only help workers adapt to technological shifts but also support businesses—particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—to remain competitive in a fast-evolving economy.

Maximizing the use of available data and granular skills intelligence will further enhance these efforts. Collaboration with platforms like LinkedIn, which track the real-time impact of AI on industries, jobs, and required skill sets, can enable smarter, data-driven decisions. These partnerships can help guide workforce training initiatives to align with real-world demands, ensuring that digital skills development addresses the evolving needs of businesses and society.

Positioning the EU as a Global AI Leader

The EU has a unique opportunity to champion a people-centered approach to AI and growth. By placing skills development at the heart of its economic strategies, Europe can build a modern and resilient workforce that fuels innovation, attracts investment, and positions the region as an AI leader on the world stage.

With the right investment in AI education, training, and responsible implementation, the EU can not only compete globally but also set a powerful example of how technology and sustainability can work hand in hand to shape a brighter future.
