French President Macron Plans to Appoint New Prime Minister Within 48 Hours
PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he plans to appoint a new prime minister within the next 48 hours. The announcement was made during a meeting on Tuesday afternoon with leaders from various political parties.
Lawmakers from both the Green Party and the conservative Les Républicains confirmed that Macron shared this timeline during the gathering at the Elysée Palace. The meeting was part of Macron’s broader attempt to resolve the political crisis that emerged following the ousting of Prime Minister Michel Barnier last Wednesday.
Last Thursday, Macron had hinted at the imminent appointment by stating in a speech that a new premier would be named “in the coming days.”
As of now, the identity of Barnier’s successor remains uncertain. French media have speculated on several potential candidates, including François Bayrou, a former Justice Minister, and Sébastien Lecornu, the current Defense Minister.
