UK: Premature to Lift Ban on Major Syrian Rebel Group

Here’s the rewritten version of the article:

A government official stated that the current priority is engaging with allies to ensure that developments in Syria present an opportunity for peace. He emphasized the need to work diligently to make this a chance for stability, saying, “At the moment, the focus has to be on talking to our allies, making sure that this is an opportunity for Syria, and therefore we have to work to make sure that it’s a peaceful opportunity.”

He further clarified that the U.K.’s efforts would center on protecting civilians and minorities, while firmly maintaining a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and violence. “We mustn’t get ahead of ourselves here in terms of what happens next,” he cautioned.

The discussion comes after Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden stirred debate on Monday by suggesting a potential “relatively swift decision” regarding the former Al-Qaeda affiliate, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). McFadden noted that any decision would depend on “what happens in terms of how that group behaves now.” Given the rapidly evolving situation on the ground, McFadden underscored the need for prompt deliberation.

The U.K. has long maintained a strict policy against engaging with proscribed organizations, which are illegal for British citizens to support or join. HTS, whose leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani has a history rooted in jihadist militancy, has recently voiced a softer stance toward Syria’s religious minorities, including Christians.

When questioned about McFadden’s earlier remarks, a spokesperson for the prime minister clarified Monday afternoon that his comments reflected the “fast-moving situation” in Syria. The government, the spokesperson said, will evaluate all groups, including HTS, based on their actions.

Separately, the U.K. Home Office confirmed on Monday that it has paused asylum decisions for Syrians who fled the now-deposed Assad regime.
