Kiruna has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2029.
The decision came down to a competition between Kiruna and Uppsala, with the European jury selecting the northern town based on its theme: “Movement. Below ground. On earth. In space.”
Despite having a much smaller budget, Kiruna outshone the prestigious university city of Uppsala.
“We aim to demonstrate that even a small, unique community has a wealth to offer. Kiruna has much to share, and while it may feel isolated at times, our spirit resonates with the rest of Europe,” stated Emma Jonsson, a growth strategist for the Kiruna municipality.
Previous European Capitals of Culture include Umeå in 2014 and Stockholm in 1998.
Sweden’s Minister of Culture, Parisa Liljestrand, expressed her hopes that this designation will encourage more individuals to explore Swedish culture.
The European expert jury’s recommendation will be formally submitted to the Swedish government in January 2025. Following this, the government will notify the European Parliament, the Council, the Commission, and the Committee of the Regions about the designation.
Kiruna, which has had to relocate due to mining subsidence, inaugurated a new center two kilometers east of the original city center in 2022.
The Polish city of Lublin has also been recognized as a Capital of Culture for 2029.
