Taiwan Travelogue, translated by Lin King, is an enchanting historical novel where abundant meals reveal a stern investigation into empire. Through the bond between a Japanese writer and her Taiwanese interpreter, Yáng Shuāng-zǐ illustrates how affection can be sincere yet distorted by privilege, class, and political power.
In May 1938, young novelist Aoyama Chizuko visits Taiwan, a Japanese colony at the time. Officially, she’s on a government-sponsored cultural tour, but her own goals are less duty-bound: she aims to escape ceremonial banquets, explore the island beyond imperial presentations, and taste its culinary offerings.
Her guide, Ō Chizuru, a well-educated Taiwanese interpreter, captivates her with linguistic skill, composure, and culinary expertise. Chizuko perceives their shared names and literary interests as signs of innate equality. Chizuru understands that equality isn’t simply declared. As an employee, colonial subject, and woman, she faces expectations that her independent guest can easily resist.
An Appetite With Consequences
Food provides the novel’s immediate delights. Trains, markets, and dining tables present dish after dish with attention to preparation, texture, and regional history. Chizuko’s huge appetite adds humor, and an authorised English extract captures her exuberance and her reliance on Chizuru’s patience.
Yet eating isn’t politically innocent here. Chizuko seeks an “authentic” Taiwan, but authenticity is shaped by migration, poverty, trade, and rulers. Her enthusiasm risks reducing the island to something a sophisticated traveler can consume. Her meals depend on Chizuru’s labor, knowledge, and accommodation, initially viewed as effortless hospitality.
This is one of Yáng’s sharpest insights. Chizuko isn’t a crude imperialist or a mere symbol of Japanese domination. She resists the official colonial agenda, seeing herself as open-minded. Her blind spot is unsettling because her intentions are often warm. She recognizes injustice in theory yet fails to see her own demands perpetuating it in private.
The Distance Between Two Women
The growing bond between Chizuko and Chizuru gives these political questions emotional depth. Their talks range from banter, shared reading, to guarded confessions. Desire is present but rarely secure enough to name. Chizuko’s infatuation conflicts with Chizuru’s duties, social status, and impending marriage.
Since the story mainly reflects Chizuko’s view, Chizuru can seem opaque. This limitation highlights the limits of a colonizer’s understanding through a narrator who confuses access with comprehension. However, this device makes Chizuru appear more like a keeper of moral truth than a fully realized character.
This imbalance is intentional. Chizuko can be candid as the consequences are lighter for her. Chizuru must consider what to say, in which language, and to whom. The romance is credible not as an escape from history but as an account of how history affects even the smallest gestures between people.
A Translation That Never Stands Still
The novel’s boldest feature is its fictional publishing history. Taiwan Travelogue poses as a translation of a rediscovered Japanese memoir, with introductions, footnotes, and afterwords that complicate the reader’s experience. This apparent documentary structure is fictional.
