In July, the U.N. noted the highest civilian mortality rates in Ukraine since March 2022. Russia reports more civilian deaths from Ukrainian strikes, though Kyiv does not deliberately target civilians but aims to “bring the war where it came from.” Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal likened the situation to a long boxing match where each side hopes the other falls first. Frontline troop movements are stalled, with civilians increasingly targeted. Analyst Mykola Bielieskov described it as a mutual attempt to diminish each side to the point of collapse. While soldiers hold the front, ordinary Ukrainians’ resilience and ability to maintain their routines will ultimately determine the war’s outcome, Vyshlinsky said. He added that this is a tactic to exhaust civilians into accepting an unfavorable peace. We must persevere until the opponent falls, hoping to hear that air raid alerts are over.

Living in Kyiv? Oh, just the usual thrill of dodging air raids while trying to keep your morning coffee intact. ☕️ Who needs a quiet life when you can have a front-row seat to this not-so-charming boxing match, right? 🎭
