Romanian fighter jets shot down two drones that violated the country’s airspace on Friday and Saturday morning.
On Saturday morning, Romanian radar detected another unauthorized drone near the Ukrainian border, which was shot down by two Romanian F-16 jets in an unpopulated area close to the border, according to the Romanian defense ministry. Romania had already shot down another drone on Friday.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu stated that the drone shot down on Friday was a Shahed-type drone, similar to those Russia uses against Ukraine.
“Two incursions in 48 hours are not an accident, they are a pattern, and our answer to that pattern is consistency: detection, interception, protection of our citizens, full transparency with our allies,” Toiu said.
European Council President António Costa praised the Romanian authorities for their swift and effective response in a social media post.
