BRUSSELS — China announced it will impose export restrictions on 14 EU defense and technology companies following the EU’s addition of 14 Chinese businesses to its Russia sanctions lists.
This represents Beijing’s most direct and forceful reaction to EU sanctions listings, which it condemned as “egregious.” Recent studies estimate that up to 90 percent of sanctioned goods reaching Russia are routed through China.
Germany’s fast-growing defense company Rheinmetall is among the 14 firms that Chinese exporters are now prohibited from supplying with dual-use goods — products with both civilian and military uses — as stated by China’s Ministry of Commerce on Friday. The list also includes Czech truckmaker Tatra, Dutch naval engineering firm IHC Merwede, and several optics and laser companies.
Exporters may seek licenses to authorize certain shipments if they are considered “truly necessary.”
The announcement was made one day after the EU included 14 Chinese and Hong Kong entities in its sanctions list, preventing European companies from conducting business with them. Most are not high-tech defense firms but logistics companies that assist Russian importers in acquiring Western technology.
