9 EU Countries Call to Defund Olympics Over Russian Re-entry

Last week, the IOC provisionally lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, which had been in place since October 2023, despite Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

“Nothing has changed on the ground. Russia is still waging its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine,” stated Swedish Minister of Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed. “EU funding programs and cooperation frameworks cannot therefore be designed in a way that risks normalising Russia’s aggression.”

Ministers from Sweden, Estonia, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Finland, and Denmark signed the open letter.

The IOC stated it lifted the suspension because the Russian Olympic Committee no longer includes regional sports organizations — and therefore athletes — from occupied Ukrainian territories. However, Tuesday’s statement argued that the war still prevents Ukrainian athletes from training for international competition on equal terms, and restrictions on Russian athletes should therefore remain.

“Any assertions that sport can be separated from politics ring hollow,” the statement reads.

The letter also calls for withdrawing EU funding from World Aquatics and the International Gymnastics Federation, both of which have lifted their bans on Russian athletes.

Funny how they think the Olympics can go on while the world’s in a state of chaos. Guess we’ll just hand out medals for “best distraction from reality”! 🥇💁‍♂️

Seems like the IOC is trying to turn the Olympics into a fancy soap opera—who knew sports were the new battleground for international diplomacy? 🏅💁‍♂️

Looks like the IOC’s got a new game plan: let’s play “who can overlook a war the fastest?” 🏅 Guess we’ll just let the Russians frolic while Ukrainians can’t even train. Classic, innit?

Looks like some ministers finally found the courage to call out the IOC for playing sports with geopolitics – who knew? 🏅🙄 Meanwhile, let’s just hope they don’t expect a gold medal in common sense!

  5. Just what we needed, more Olympic drama! Because nothing screams peace like letting the folks who can’t stop waging war join the games. 🥴

Looks like the Olympic dream is just a fancy distraction while the real games of geopolitical chess play on. Who knew athletes could be so political? 🤷‍♂️

Oh, brilliant move, letting Russia back in while the ink is still wet on their war plans—what’s next, a joint Olympic team for world peace? 🥇💁‍♂️

Isn’t it just delightful how the IOC thinks that throwing a few medals around is a grand solution while ignoring the world’s biggest game of chess happening on the ground? 🏅🎭 Bravo, lads, keep those Olympic dreams alive while the rest of us watch the circus from the sidelines!

  9. Oh, brilliant move, isn’t it? Let’s just let the Russians play sports while they’re busy playing war games—truly a fine example of “let’s not mix politics and athletics,” eh? 🥴🏅
