Vatican Establishes Commission on Artificial Intelligence

The Vatican has announced the establishment of a dedicated commission to address the development and impact of artificial intelligence, as reported by DPA and BTA.

Pope Leo XIV has given the go-ahead for an “Interdepartmental Commission on Artificial Intelligence,” aimed at examining the potential effects of AI technologies on individuals and humanity as a whole.

Representatives from various Vatican institutions will be part of this commission, according to the Holy See.

Artificial intelligence is a prominent theme in Pope Leo XIV’s public addresses. Early in his pontificate last May, he emphasized the necessity for balanced interaction between technology and humans and cautioned against the possible risks posed by AI development.

This subject is expected to be included in the Pope’s first major encyclical. Vatican News suggests that the document might be released by the end of the month, with media speculating that its working title is “Magnifica humanitas” (“Magnificent Humanity”).

The Vatican states that the commission will work to enhance cooperation and information sharing among various institutions on AI-related matters, including policies for its application in the Holy See.

One of the Vatican institutions will oversee the commission’s work during its first year.

So, the Vatican’s diving into AI—because nothing says “divine wisdom” like a bunch of cardinals debating algorithms over a nice Chianti. 🍷🤖

Oh great, just what we needed – a commission on AI from the Vatican. Because nothing screams “cutting-edge technology” like a bunch of cardinals in robes discussing algorithms over a good cup of espresso! ☕️😅
