The central theme of the European Environment Agency (EEA) 2026 photo competition ‘Resilient by Nature’, launched today, is the relationship between nature and society. It invites Europeans to portray how nature sustains life, reacts to challenges, and recovers in a transforming world.
Open for submissions from 18 May to 10 August 2026, the contest urges photography enthusiasts to delve into our unique bond with nature. Entrants can submit up to five photos illustrating ecosystem functions, disruptions, and restoration processes.
The competition welcomes adults from EEA member and cooperating countries, with no entry fee required. Category winners will receive cash prizes, along with additional awards for public choice and youth prize.
This year’s edition includes three categories aimed at depicting a holistic view of nature’s resilience:
1. Harmony
emphasizes the unseen connections and processes maintaining ecosystem functionality, like pollination, migration, natural patterns, and interactions.
2. Disruption
captures instances of stress in natural systems, such as extreme weather, pollution, or other human impacts.
3. Renewal
showcases recovery and adaptation, highlighting restoration efforts, nature-based solutions, and community initiatives aiding ecosystems to regain balance.
