Dr. Abdinasir Abubakar, WHO Representative in Lebanon, reported to UN News from Beirut about a deadly escalation of violence in the country, describing Wednesday as one of the deadliest days. Multiple strikes hit densely populated areas, including Beirut, during the working day, leading to panic and chaos. Over 200 people died, and more than 1,000 were injured, including women, children, and healthcare workers. Many remain trapped under rubble.
Hospitals nationwide are overwhelmed, facing shortages of critical supplies, and have activated mass casualty protocols. Dr. Abubakar noted the hospitals are receiving unidentified bodies and body parts, illustrating the attack’s devastation. Healthcare facilities have been targeted, killing over 50 healthcare workers and injuring more than 150 in 40 days, further straining the health system and limiting access to essential care.
WHO collaborates with the Lebanese Ministry of Health to provide support, risking depletion of resources due to ongoing demands from the crisis. Logistical challenges hinder supply replenishment, with limited transport options into the country. An urgent international appeal has been made for resources and funds to maintain life-saving operations and humanitarian assistance.
