Pistorius of Germany Downplays US Troop Reduction, Highlights Europe’s Defense Efforts

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to reduce U.S. troops amid a public disagreement with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who criticized the U.S. for being “humiliated” by Iran.

The Pentagon’s statement will still maintain about 33,000 U.S. troops in Germany, changing a buildup that started under President Joe Biden.

A European Commission spokesperson informed POLITICO that the U.S. military presence in Europe is crucial for NATO’s defense, forming the foundation for collective defense among 23 EU Member States who are NATO Allies. The spokesperson added that EU nations are fulfilling their NATO obligations by boosting military spending at an unprecedented rate.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the withdrawal based on “conditions on the ground” after reviewing the U.S. troop buildup in Europe. Parnell noted that they expect the withdrawal within the next six to 12 months.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized the “disastrous trend” in Europe-U.S. relations following the Pentagon’s announcement. Tusk expressed that the “greatest threat” to the transatlantic community is the “ongoing disintegration of our alliance” and emphasized the need to reverse this trend in an X post on Saturday.

Trump has also indicated plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Spain and Italy, criticizing Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Italian leader Giorgia Meloni. Madrid and Rome, similar to Berlin, have opposed the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran.

During a meeting with reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump stated he would “probably” withdraw American troops from the two southern European nations, accusing Italy of being unhelpful and labeling Spain as “absolutely horrible.” Both countries have refused to allow U.S. military planes involved in the Iran conflict to use their bases.

Victor Jack contributed to the report.

So, the U.S. is downsizing its military holiday in Europe, eh? Guess we’ll just have to rely on our charming accents and robust military spending to keep the peace, right? 😂

Seems like our American friends have finally figured out that the best way to boost European defense is to pack their bags and leave us to it. Brilliant strategy, really—who knew withdrawing troops could be the new form of encouragement? 😂✈️

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “stability” like a few less U.S. troops hanging around while Europe flexes its military budget like a kid showing off his new gym membership. 🇩🇪💪

Can’t wait to see how Europe manages to defend itself with the strength of a soggy baguette and a few extra bucks for military spending. 😂 Good luck with that, chaps!

Oh, lovely! Nothing screams unity like a good ol’ game of ‘musical chairs’ with soldiers. I suppose we’ll just have to bolster our espresso supply while trying to remember how to defend ourselves, eh? 😂

Isn’t it charming how Europe’s defense efforts are now like a group of friends trying to lift a stubborn sofa while the Americans watch from the sidelines? 😂 It’s almost as if we’ve all agreed to play chess while the real game of thrones is happening elsewhere!

Oh, splendid, isn’t it? Nothing says “strong alliance” quite like a game of musical chairs with troops while Europe’s defense efforts are hailed like a Michelin-star meal. 🍽️

Typical, isn’t it? Just when we thought Europe was finally stepping up to the plate, Uncle Sam decides to play hard to get with his troops. 🧐

  9. Looks like the U.S. is pulling a classic “let’s take our ball and go home” move while Europe flexes its muscles – how very *noble* of us to boost military spending just to keep the party going, eh? 😏💰

Looks like Europe’s really stepping up, eh? Who knew spending more on defense would be the new trend—next up, we’ll be swapping our croissants for combat boots! 😂💼

So, we’re boosting military spending like it’s a Black Friday sale while the U.S. is packing its bags? 🤔 Typical European efficiency, eh? Might as well just erect a ‘Help Wanted’ sign on NATO’s door! 😂

Oh, splendid! Just what we needed—Europe’s defense efforts spotlighted while the U.S. plays a game of musical chairs with their troops. 😄 Who knew “downplaying” was the new “strengthening”?

Oh, splendid! Nothing says “we’re all in this together” quite like a good ol’ troop tap dance while we pretend Europe is a military powerhouse. Who needs allies when you’ve got 33,000 visitors on a permanent holiday? 😂

  14. Seems like Europe is flexing its muscles while the U.S. plays musical chairs with troops—who knew defense could be so… entertaining? 😏🇩🇪

Oh, marvellous! Just what we needed – a few less American boots on our European soil, because clearly, we’ve been managing quite well on our own with a bit of military spending and a dash of hope. 🤷‍♂️💸

Troops playing musical chairs, eh? Just what we need – a bit of a NATO version of “Simon Says” in Europe while everyone else is busy raising military budgets like they’re trying to outdo each other in a pub quiz. 🍻
