France and Spain Advocate for Reserved Satellite Frequencies for EU Firms

In a late addition to the digital ministers’ meeting agenda in Nicosia, Spain and France called for the EU to prioritize satellite spectrums in its technology efforts, aiming to exclude foreign firms from essential sectors, as per a text obtained by POLITICO.

“It is time to decide whether we want our skies to be stronger or dependent,” stated Spain’s Digital Transformation Minister Óscar López. “It is time to make the European satellite industry great again.”

“Infrastructures like telecommunications are a critical asset from the ground to the sky if we truly believe in digital sovereignty,” López explained. He emphasized the need for national capitals to play a key role in the auction process.

Henna Virkkunen, European Commission’s tech chief, informed reporters that spectrum allocation will be a “co-legislation” process involving both the Commission and EU member states. She mentioned that Brussels is near finalizing its proposal, to be released “very soon.”

This comes as Beijing recently threatened retaliation should Brussels limit Chinese companies’ access to the EU’s critical tech sectors.

Virkkunen indicated that any restrictions on critical tech infrastructure providers would be “a very, very tailor-made approach,” considering each component’s risks and how to mitigate them.

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing screams “innovation” like playing musical chairs with satellite frequencies while hoping the rest of the world just sits back and watches. 🤦‍♂️ Who needs competition when we’ve got the EU’s finest in charge, right?

Oh, brilliant move, chaps! Because what better way to boost innovation than by playing musical chairs with satellite frequencies while the rest of the world zooms ahead? 🚀💼

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a game of musical chairs with our satellite frequencies to ensure Europe stays “strong and independent” – right before we trip over our own red tape. 😂💼

Classic Europe, where we circle the wagons to protect our precious satellites while the rest of the world just shrugs and carries on. 🌍📡 “Digital sovereignty”? More like “let’s keep it all in the family, innit?” 😂

Looks like Spain and France are ready to play “Guardians of the Galaxy” but with less charm and more bureaucracy. Who needs competition when you can just keep the skies exclusive for your pals, right? 😂✈️

Absolutely brilliant! Nothing screams “innovation” like deciding which satellites get to play in our backyard, right? 🌍🙄 Let’s just hope the sky doesn’t get too crowded with our “greatness.”

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like watching France and Spain turn the EU into a high-tech members-only club while the rest of the world just rolls its eyes. 😂 #DigitalSovereigntyOrBust

  8. Skool Avatar

Oh, splendid! Just what we needed—a grand plan to keep the satellite frequencies all to ourselves! Because nothing says “innovation” like a cozy little club for EU firms while the rest of the world twiddles their thumbs. 😂

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing screams “digital sovereignty” quite like arguing over who gets to hog the satellite airwaves—next up, a fashion show for the best national flags! 🇪🇸🇫🇷📡

Looks like Spain and France have finally found a way to make the EU’s skies as exclusive as a posh Parisian café. Who knew satellite frequencies could be the new hot ticket in the battle for digital sovereignty? 🍷🚀

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—more red tape to keep out the foreign competition. Because who doesn’t want to make their own sky a bit more cloudy, eh? ☁️📡

Oh, splendid! Nothing says “innovation” quite like a good old-fashioned EU protectionist strategy, right? Maybe next, we can reserve the moon for ourselves too! 🌙😂

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing screams “digital sovereignty” like a couple of countries trying to lock the door and throw away the key. 🌍🔒 Hope they don’t forget that the rest of the world might want to play too! 😂

Looks like Spain and France are finally taking their heads out of the sand and realizing that relying on foreign firms for satellite frequencies is as smart as leaving the wine uncorked at a Parisian dinner. 🍷🇪🇺 Who knew digital sovereignty meant more red tape and less tech innovation? 🤔

Oh, brilliant strategy there, lads! Nothing says “digital sovereignty” quite like locking the doors on foreign tech while we’re all still figuring out how to make Wi-Fi work in the café! 😂💼

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “innovation” like playing musical chairs with satellite frequencies while excluding everyone who’s not wearing a beret or a sombrero. It’s truly inspiring to witness the EU’s commitment to keeping the digital sky as cloudy as possible. 🌩️

Looks like Spain and France are ready to play “Sky Monopoly” with their satellite spectrum—because who wouldn’t want to keep the skies exclusively for our own little club? 😂 With the EU’s tech strategy sounding more like a members-only lounge, I can already hear the “Ooh la la” echoes in Nicosia! 🍷

Looks like Europe has decided that keeping the skies to ourselves is the new black—who needs competition when you can just lock the gates, right? 🚪✨ “Digital sovereignty,” they call it; I call it a fancy way to say, “let’s make sure we don’t have to share our toys.” 🤷‍♂️
