Georgia’s pro-European Union President, Salome Zourabichvili, has called on citizens to stand against the government’s latest decisions, expressing deep concerns over the country’s political trajectory.
“In this pivotal moment, it’s clear that our nation is drifting back toward Russia — a grip we struggled so hard to break free from,” Zourabichvili stated during a televised address.
Following her message, the president joined demonstrators outside the parliament, where she passionately declared, “This resistance has begun, and it will not stop until new elections are held.”
Confronting riot police directly, she posed a pointed question: “Do you serve Georgia or Russia? Where does your loyalty truly lie?” She emphasized her words by knocking on their shields.
The controversy stems from the prime minister’s decision to reject Georgia’s EU candidacy bid. This move follows a toughly worded resolution from the European Parliament, issued last Thursday, which criticized the nation’s recent parliamentary elections as not “free and fair” and urged a re-run under international monitoring.
Adding to the tension, the EU announced earlier in October that Georgia’s progression toward accession had been suspended, citing a significant “regression” in the country’s democratic and reform efforts.
