South Asia: Advancing Together as a Global Community

Forty-five participants from LWF member churches in the South Asia sub-region, including NELC and the recently joined Bodo Evangelical Lutheran Church (BELC) and Manipur Evangelical Lutheran Church (MELC) of India, attended.

The workshop emphasized Lutheran theology and identity fundamentals. Rev. Dr Rospita Siahaan, LWF Regional Secretary for Asia, highlighted the collaboration among the Office of the General Secretary, Department for Theology, Mission and Justice, and World Service in enhancing Lutheran identity understanding.

Close Guidance on Lutheran Identity

This workshop illustrated the LWF’s dedication to enriching Lutheran identity through collective theological reflection. Rev. Dr Songram Basumatary, from Gurukul Lutheran Theological College and Research Institute, emphasized unity in their shared confession and salvation by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Rev. Dr Joshuva Peter, Executive Secretary of the United Evangelical Lutheran Churches in India (UELCI), remarked on the liberating power of love that frees individuals to serve others. The core Lutheran principles of freedom, love, and service gained renewed meaning in Kathmandu and opposed the prevalent societal issues of discrimination and injustice.

Participants also considered the evolving nature of Lutheran identity, examining how a unified Lutheran tradition is represented through language, culture, worship, spirituality, service, and public witness diversity.
