Rail Presents Major Opportunity for Europe to Reduce Transport Emissions Amid Road Transport Dominance | Press Releases

Transport remains Europe’s ongoing climate challenge. Rail provides a low-emission option for moving people and goods, but Europe’s dependence on road transport keeps greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions high, as per a report by the European Environment Agency published today.

Transport is crucial for modern society and the European economy, supporting over 10 million jobs and contributing about 5% to the EU’s GDP. However, it is the only major sector where greenhouse gas emissions have risen since 1990. In 2023, transport contributed to roughly a third of total EU greenhouse gas emissions, with road transport being the main contributor, according to the “Sustainability of Europe’s mobility systems 2025” report, published today.

Achieving the EU’s goals — including climate neutrality by 2050 and the Zero Pollution targets for 2030 — requires ongoing efforts. Despite progress in reducing exhaust emissions, transport continues to place significant pressure on the environment and human health. Emissions of certain pollutants like ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are still challenging to reduce, and noise pollution from transport affects millions across Europe.

Road transport remains predominant for passenger and freight travel. Passenger cars make up about 72% of transport activity in Europe, while public transport hasn’t significantly increased its share. In 2023, road transport accounted for nearly three-quarters of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the sector’s reliance on fossil fuels, which account for more than 90% of its energy consumption. Road traffic also is the chief source of transport-related noise, impacting around 90 million people in the EU with harmful noise levels beyond established thresholds.

Conversely, rail transport offers high energy efficiency with low greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, making it an effective choice for reducing transport’s environmental impact, especially for medium- and long-distance travel. However, Europe’s rail system remains fragmented, and limited cross-border integration hampers its ability to compete with car and air travel. Rail freight activity decreased between 1995 and 2023, though demand is expected to rise in the next decade.

Looking forward, aviation and maritime transport are expected to account for an increasing share of Europe’s transport emissions. Their combined contribution is projected to rise from about a quarter of current transport-related greenhouse gas emissions to nearly half by 2050, emphasizing the need for sustained action across all transport modes.

The report concludes that achieving sustainable transport in Europe will require consistent public and private investment, ongoing innovation, and the effective implementation of existing legislation, including the revised Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the new ETS2, with stringent standards for road, aviation, and maritime sectors.

Making cleaner transport modes more accessible and attractive for both passengers and freight is crucial for reducing emissions, improving air quality, and decreasing noise pollution across Europe.

Can’t wait for the day when rail transport finally gets its act together and gives road transport a run for its money—until then, we’ll keep enjoying our leisurely strolls through the smog! 🚗💨

So, let’s just keep driving around in our lovely gas guzzlers while we wait for the rail system to figure out how to play nice across borders—brilliant strategy, really! 🚗💨

  3. Isn’t it delightful how we’re all aboard the road transport express while rail’s just sitting there like the forgotten cousin at a family reunion? 🚂💨 Who needs emissions reduction when we can enjoy a good traffic jam instead, right? 😏

Oh sure, let’s all jump on the train to sustainability while the roads play host to our beloved gas-guzzlers. 🚗💨 Because nothing screams progress like getting stuck in traffic while the railways are just sitting there, looking pretty! 😂

  5. Looks like the rail’s got a chance to actually be useful for once! 🚂 But with Europe’s love affair with road trips, good luck trying to convince anyone to hop on the train instead of their beloved gas guzzler. 😏

  6. Looks like we’re still waiting for the ‘rail revolution’ to save us from our car-loving ways. Maybe if we slap a few more eco-friendly stickers on our gas guzzlers, that’ll do the trick! 🚗💨

  7. Oh sure, let’s just hop on the train and pretend it’s the 1800s again—because who doesn’t love a good steam engine when you can sit in traffic for hours instead? 🚂💨

  8. Looks like we’re all aboard the “let’s ignore the train” express while road transport continues to puff out emissions like a chimney in winter. 🚗💨 Brilliant strategy, lads!

Oh, brilliant! Let’s just keep pushing our beloved cars while pretending trains are an option. Nothing like a dash of irony in the race for emissions reduction, eh? 🚗💨

  10. Looks like we’re all set to hop on the ‘green train’ to sustainability while we drive our cars to the station. 🚗💨 Who knew that reducing emissions could be so… complicated? 🥴

Who knew that trains could be the unsung heroes of emissions reduction while we’re all busy zipping around in our metal boxes on wheels? 🚗💨 Maybe if they made the trains a tad less like a game of musical chairs, we’d all jump aboard!

Seems like Europe is finally waking up to the fact that trains could be a thing again—who knew? 🚂 But hey, why bother with rail when we can just keep honking our way to climate goals, right? 😂

  13. Transport emissions? Oh, joy! Let’s just stick to our beloved cars while the trains sit there looking pretty. 🚗💨 Who needs efficiency when you’ve got a traffic jam as your daily backdrop, right? 😂

  14. Oh, brilliant! Who knew that trains could actually help the planet? 🚂 But let’s keep piling into our cars like sardines, shall we? After all, who needs clean air when we’ve got traffic jams to enjoy! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Let’s keep pouring money into roads while pretending trains are just a quaint option for the nostalgic few. Who needs clean air when you can sit in traffic, right? 🚗💨

  16. Looks like we finally found the magic bullet for emissions: let’s all squeeze onto a train like sardines instead of cruising in our comfy cars. Who needs freedom of the open road when you can enjoy the sweet sound of clattering tracks? 😂🚂

Honestly, who doesn’t love sitting in a traffic jam while the train quietly chugs by, offering a low-emission escape? 🤦‍♂️ If only we could hitch a ride on that rail revolution, but hey, let’s just keep burning fossil fuel like it’s an Olympic sport! 🚗💨

Isn’t it charming how we’re still relying on our beloved roads, while rail just sits there, waiting for a miracle? 🚂 But hey, who needs a coherent transport system when you’ve got a good ol’ traffic jam to enjoy, right? 😂
