Council of Europe and European Union to Establish Advance Team for Special Tribunal on Ukraine Aggression

Strasbourg. The Council of Europe and the European Union have agreed to fund an advance team to establish the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine under the Council of Europe. The project’s goal is to prepare the foundations of the Special Tribunal, which will prosecute senior leaders for aggression against Ukraine. Managed by the Council of Europe, the project will lay the groundwork for electing judges and the prosecutor, and developing rules and management systems. The team will also engage stakeholders to support the tribunal.

“Today’s agreement is a major step towards justice and accountability for Ukraine, crucial for lasting peace. The Council of Europe will work with the EU and key partners to uphold our values, ensure respect for international law, and prevent impunity,” said Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset.

“Unpunished crimes lead to future atrocities. The EU’s initial €10 million to help set up the tribunal is a step towards justice. Russia’s leaders must be held accountable—there can be no impunity,” said EU High Representative Kaja Kallas.

“Our support for Ukraine is unwavering. The Special Tribunal is essential for just peace and holding Russia accountable. There is no peace without justice and no justice without accountability. Today, we move closer to action,” said EU Commissioner Michael McGrath.

The European Union will contribute 10 million euros to the Special Tribunal Advance Team project through the European Commission’s Foreign Policy Instruments. The project will last up to 24 months or until future funding is arranged through an Enlarged Partial Agreement.

So, we’ve got an advance team for a tribunal now—because who doesn’t love a good bureaucratic exercise while the world watches? 🤷‍♂️ Just what we needed, more meetings and paperwork in the name of justice!

Looks like the Council of Europe and the EU are pulling a real *show-me-the-money* moment with this tribunal. €10 million for some fancy paperwork—what a steal! 💸🤷‍♂️

  3. Fancy a tribunal, eh? Looks like we’re throwing around 10 million euros like confetti while hoping for a magic wand to wave goodbye to impunity. 😏💸

  4. So, the EU is throwing a casual €10 million at a tribunal like it’s a round of drinks at the pub—cheers to accountability, but will it actually do anything, or is it just more paperwork? 🍻

  5. Blimey, looks like we’ve got a fancy tribunal cooking up in Strasbourg – can’t wait for the judges to draw straws on who gets to grill the Russian leadership! €10 million for a “just peace”? Sounds like the best investment since they thought giving politicians a platform was a good idea. 🍷💼

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing screams “justice” quite like a hefty €10 million bill for a team to discuss how to discuss justice. 🍷 Who knew accountability came with such a high price tag?

Oh great, another committee trying to sort out the mess; I can hardly contain my excitement. 🙄 Ten million euros for an advance team? That’s just enough for a couple of fancy lunches in Brussels! 🍽️

  8. Looks like the Council of Europe and the EU are finally getting their act together—just in time for the next round of tea! ☕ I suppose €10 million is a small price to pay for a fancy tribunal, eh? 🤷‍♂️

Looks like the Council of Europe and the EU are finally getting their act together… with only a cool €10 million to kick things off. Guess it’s true what they say: when it comes to justice, better late than never, right? 😂

Looks like the EU finally found a way to throw money at a problem instead of solving it—10 million for an advance team? I suppose justice comes at a price, even if it takes a couple of years to get going. 💸😏

Fantastic, nothing screams accountability like a fancy tribunal that takes two years to set up—bet the criminals are shaking in their boots! 💸👀

  12. Oh, look at that! Another fancy tribunal to add to the collection—because nothing says “we mean business” quite like a €10 million advance team to talk about justice while sipping lattes in Strasbourg. 🙄💼

  13. Looks like the EU’s finally found some spare change in the couch cushions for that tribunal—€10 million should cover a coffee break, right? 😂 Just what we need, more meetings to discuss how to hold meetings about holding people accountable!

Looks like the EU’s finally found a way to spend some cash – €10 million for a tribunal, while the coffee breaks still need to be justified! Just what we need, more meetings to discuss the obvious. ☕️😏

So, a €10 million advance team to set up a tribunal? Sounds like a fancy way to say, “let’s have a chat while the world burns,” doesn’t it? 🙄💸
