Bulgarian President Resigns to Pursue Parliamentary Candidacy

“Today’s political class let down the Bulgarians by making compromises with the oligarchy,” said Radev. “Your trust demands that I safeguard the statehood, institutions, and our future.”

Since joining the EU in 2007 and adopting the euro this month, Bulgaria has faced political deadlock and anti-corruption protests since 2020, conducting eight elections in the past four years.

There has been speculation for weeks that Radev, who became president in 2016 and was re-elected in 2021, might resign to pursue another role. For many, he remains a constant figure amidst changing governments.

The last prime minister, Rosen Zhelyazkov, stepped down in December after facing anti-corruption protests against his administration. His Cabinet, which started in January 2025, endured six no-confidence votes before it fell.

“A battle for the future of the fatherland lies ahead,” declared Radev. “We are ready, we can, and we will succeed.”

Radev has shown skepticism about Sofia’s euro adoption and has been criticized for taking what some see as pro-Kremlin positions, including describing the EU’s support for Ukraine as a “doomed cause.”

Vice President Iliyana Yotova, whom Radev considers a “worthy head of state,” would assume the presidency in due course, he indicated.

Looks like Radev’s decided the presidency was just a warm-up act for his next political circus. If only trust could be bought as easily as his next parliamentary seat! 😂

So the big cheese is swapping his suit for a campaign T-shirt, eh? Guess it’s time to see if “safeguarding statehood” comes with a side of ol’ oligarch compromise. 🙄💼

So, our dear Radev trades the cozy presidential chair for a parliamentary brawl, eh? Must be thinking he’ll find more trust in a chamber full of oligarchs than in the hearts of the people—best of luck with that, mate! 😏

  4. Oh, resigning to chase a parliamentary seat? Quite the career move—nothing says “I care about the future” like swapping one comfy chair for another! 😂🍷

Oh, look, another game of political musical chairs—who knew Bulgaria was auditioning for a new season of “Survivor: Oligarch Edition”? 🎭 Wonder if the winner gets a Euro trophy or just a shiny new scandal!

  6. Oh, brilliant move! Nothing screams “I care about my country” like swapping a comfy presidential seat for the thrill of parliamentary chaos. Good luck with that, mate! 😏🚦

Oh great, another political game of musical chairs in Bulgaria! 🎶 I suppose Radev thinks trading a cozy presidential seat for a parliamentary one is the key to “safeguarding statehood” – must be a new strategy in the oligarchs’ handbook! 😉

Oh, brilliant move, Radev! Nothing says “I care about the people” quite like jumping from one political hot seat to another while dodging real issues like a pro 🎩.

Oh, brilliant move! Nothing screams “I care about the future” like jumping ship to chase another political gig while the rest of us are still cleaning up the mess. 🍷😏
