A high-level conference in Tirana, supported by the “EU for Justice” project, convened judges, prosecutors, civil society representatives, and international partners to explore how clearer and more consistent judicial practices can enhance the quality of justice in Albania.
The discussions aimed at strengthening justice quality through improved access to judicial practices and better coordination to ensure fairer and more predictable decisions.
European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, emphasized the importance of justice in the context of Albania’s EU accession during his address at the conference.
He noted the conference’s relevance to every citizen regarding the quality and efficiency of justice.
“Today’s conference establishes the agenda for the upcoming year, concentrating on the rule of law, the consolidation of justice reform, and support for all judicial institutions, including the High Court and the Constitutional Court,” Ambassador Gonzato stated.
“Albanian judges face the challenge of a growing backlog while maintaining high justice standards, necessitating decisive action from the HJC and HPC, especially in increasing the number of judges along with sufficient legal advisors and assistants,” Gonzato added.
The ambassador reiterated the EU’s commitment to ongoing support.
“As Albania progresses toward EU membership, incorporating EU law into judicial decisions is vital, and we will continue our support in partnership with the ‘EU for Justice’ project,” Gonzato affirmed.
Additionally, High Court of Albania head Sokol Sadushi remarked on the importance of quickly reviewing cases, highlighting that speed without coherence can lead to legal risks.
Sadushi stated, “The quality of justice is not solely assessed by trial speed or case reduction, but primarily by the strength of reasoning, clarity, and predictability in decision-making.” (14 January)
