France to Establish Consulate in Greenland in February Following Trump Threats

PARIS — France will establish its first consulate in Greenland on February 6, according to French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noël Barrot in a radio interview on Wednesday.

Barrot mentioned that opening a French diplomatic office in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, serves as a “political signal” amid concerns from U.S. President Donald Trump’s intentions to acquire the territory, which is managed by Denmark, causing unease in European capitals.

French President Emmanuel Macron had previously announced the consulate plan during his visit to Nuuk in June. He criticized Washington for its interest in Greenland during a significant foreign policy speech last week.
