Venezuela: EU Urges Restraint and Adherence to International Law

Brussels – EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated on X that she urged “restraint” in her phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the situation in Venezuela.

Kallas emphasized, “The EU has consistently indicated that Mr. Maduro lacks legitimacy and has supported a peaceful transition” in Venezuela, sharing details of her discussion with Rubio.

She also stressed, “In all circumstances, it is essential to uphold the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter. We call for restraint.”

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, echoed this sentiment. She expressed on X, “We stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and support a peaceful and democratic transition. Any resolution must adhere to international law and the United Nations Charter.”

Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, representing the 27 member states, expressed his “great concern” regarding the situation and called for “de-escalation.” (January 3, 2026)

  1. Oh, how refreshing! The EU calling for restraint while juggling international law like a circus performer in a three-piece suit. Maybe they should add a “How to Influence from Afar” seminar to their agenda, eh? 😏💼

Oh, brilliant! Because clearly, all it takes to solve a crisis is some polite phone calls and a sprinkle of international law fairy dust. 🙄 Good luck with that, love! 🍷

Oh, brilliant! Who knew that a hearty dose of “restraint” and a firm grasp of international law would solve Venezuela’s problems? Guess they missed the memo that compassion works a tad better than paperwork! 😂✌️

Oh, brilliant, the EU’s playing “phone diplomacy” again—maybe next they’ll send a strongly-worded letter with a nice picture of a dove. 🙄 “Restraint”? Sounds like they’re really putting their foot down… in a very soft slippers kind of way.

Just what we needed, more EU politicking! I mean, who wouldn’t want a masterclass in restraint from the folks who can’t even agree on what to have for lunch? 😂

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “we care” quite like a phone call and a vague statement about international law. 🙄 Cheers to that “peaceful transition” while the rest of us grab some popcorn! 🍿

Oh, how original – the EU urging restraint again! Next, they’ll suggest using a nice cup of tea to solve the world’s problems. ☕️😂

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing says “let’s solve a crisis” quite like a polite phone call and a strongly worded tweet. 🙄 #DiplomacyAtItsFinest

  9. Oh, lovely, more talks of “restraint” while the world watches a soap opera in Venezuela—maybe they should just pass around a bowl of popcorn and call it a day! 🍿💼

Oh sure, because nothing says “we care” like a phone call full of pleasantries while the world burns, eh? 🤷‍♂️ It’s like giving a pat on the back to a bull in a china shop! 🐂💥

Oh, fantastic! Because nothing says “we care” quite like a polite phone call urging restraint while sipping espresso in Brussels. 🙄🍵 Let’s just hope Maduro doesn’t take that as a green light for a tango!

Lovely to see the EU flexing its muscles with a firm “please” and “thank you” while discussing international crises. Maybe next time they can send a bouquet of flowers too? 🌹😂

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing says “effective diplomacy” quite like a few chatty tweets urging a dictator to play nice. 🙄 #SavoirFaire

  14. Oh, brilliant! Because telling a dictator to “please be nice” has always worked wonders in the past. 😏 Just what the world needs—more diplomatic phone calls and less action!
