The ECB to Illuminate South Façade of Main Building in Frankfurt to Celebrate Bulgaria’s Euro Area Accession

FRANKFURT AM MAIN – Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), has emphasized the critical countdown to Bulgaria’s entry into the euro area. “Only 10 days remain before Bulgaria becomes the 21st member of the euro area,” she stated in a Facebook post. Just over two weeks ago, Lagarde mentioned that there were 25 days left until the country adopts the single currency.

On New Year’s Eve, before 1 January, when Bulgaria officially integrates the euro, the ECB will illuminate the southern façade of its main Frankfurt building to celebrate the country’s entry into the euro area effective 1 January 2026.

The animation will display the message “Welcome, Bulgaria” in all official languages of euro area countries, alongside a showcase of the national design for the 50 cent, 1 euro, and 2 euro coins. This four-minute clip will be projected from 1 to 11 January 2026, featuring visual elements in the EU colors of blue and yellow, arranged in algorithmically generated lines and bars accompanied by the music of “Ode to Joy.” The first showing will occur on New Year’s Day.

Accompanying visuals will include white lines and “bubbles” that present social and cultural facts about Europe, such as the number of countries, languages, and major cities. The visual theme represents “unity in diversity,” highlighting European identity and the significance of Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area.

The animation will also be observable from the air, with the ECB planning to coordinate with airlines operating in Germany and Bulgaria to facilitate aerial filming from departing and arriving flights in Frankfurt. (22 December)

Brilliant! Nothing says “happy new year” quite like a light show in Frankfurt for a country that’s joining the euro – because who needs fireworks when you can have a 4-minute presentation on coins and unity? 🎉💰

Just what we needed, a light show to mark Bulgaria’s grand entrance into the euro club. 💡🎉 Because nothing screams “economic stability” like a flashy projection and some bubbles, eh? 😂

  3. Oh, how lovely! Nothing screams “welcome to the euro” quite like a flashy light show in Frankfurt—because surely, a warm hug would be too much to ask, right? 💁‍♂️✨

  4. Oh, splendid! Nothing like a light show to distract us from the fact that we’ve been waiting for Bulgaria to join the euro since before the invention of sliced bread. 🎉🤑

Only the ECB would think illuminating a building is the pinnacle of celebrating a country’s euro debut. I mean, who needs actual economic stability when you can have a light show, right? 🎉💡

Oh, because nothing screams “Welcome to the Euro” like a fancy light show and a four-minute clip of bubbles, right? 🎉 Just what we need—more algorithmic lines and a soundtrack to remind us of unity while we fumble through currency conversion! 😂

  7. Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “welcome to the Euro” quite like a light show and a 4-minute clip, because who wouldn’t want to ring in the new year with a bit of algorithmic flair? 🎉💸

  8. Brilliant! Because what says “Welcome to the euro” better than a flashy light show and some bubbles—just like a birthday party for a teenager, innit? 🎉💶

Just what we needed, a light show to welcome Bulgaria to the euro family—because nothing says unity like an overpriced light display and a catchy tune, right? 🎉💸 Can’t wait for the aerial shots; hope they’re worth the price of a pint! 🍻

  10. Oh, how lovely! Nothing says “Welcome to the euro club” like a flashy light show—because, you know, real integration can just wait for the fireworks! 🎆💸

So, we’re gonna light up Frankfurt like it’s a Christmas market just to say “Welcome” to Bulgaria? 🎉 How lovely! Nothing says “we take your euro seriously” quite like a flashy light show and a catchy tune. Just what we needed! 😏

Just what we needed, another light show to remind us that Europe is a never-ending festival of bureaucracy. 🎉 I can’t wait for the grand spectacle while I sip my lukewarm coffee in the cold Frankfurt air! ☕️💡
