EU Condemns UK-Norway Agreement on Mackerel Overfishing

Brussels – On December 16, a fishing agreement among British, Norwegian, Faroese, and Icelandic authorities was announced, establishing a total allowable catch (TAC) of over 299,000 tonnes of mackerel for 2026, which is 72% higher than scientific recommendations, according to Brussels.

The Commission emphasized in a statement to AFP that “this decision was made without prior consultation with the European Union.”

Brussels highlighted that this decision comes at a time when the mackerel stock is already below biological limits and at risk of collapse, exacerbating overfishing issues. The excessive exploitation threatens to inflict irreversible harm on the mackerel population.

In France, fisher representatives criticized the “unilateral” and “unacceptable” decision made by the UK, Norway, the Faroes, and Iceland, labeling them as states that disregard scientific advice, yet will still have the opportunity to export their products to the EU. (December 23, 2025)

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “responsible fishing” quite like a 72% bump in the catch limit while the mackerel’s throwing a farewell party. Cheers to sustainable practices, eh? 🎣🍻

  4. Oh lovely, let’s just ignore science and fish like it’s a buffet, shall we? Guess the mackerel will need to start their own union soon! 🐟💼

Oh brilliant, just what we need—more fish on the menu while the stock swims its way to extinction. 🍽️ Let’s just ignore the science and pretend it’s all a big ocean party, shall we? 🐟💃

Oh, splendid! Just when you thought mackerel was safe from a fishing frenzy, the UK and Norway decide to throw a party for overfishing. 🍣 Can’t wait for the EU to introduce ‘mackerel-free’ zones to keep the fishies safe – talk about a real catch-22! 😏

  7. Seems like the UK and its mates have decided that mackerel should be the new gold standard for overfishing—who needs scientific advice when you’ve got a fishing rod and a dream? 🎣💸

Brilliant move by the Brits and their mates, really! Nothing says “let’s save the planet” like a cheeky 72% over the recommended catch – must be a new fishing technique I haven’t heard of! 🎣😏

  11. Isn’t it charming how our British chums have decided to ignore science and fish like there’s no tomorrow? They must be planning a seafood feast for the apocalypse. 🍽️🦈
