EU leader vows support for Greenland amid increased US interest

The EU expresses its solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.

This was conveyed by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, following the appointment of a U.S. envoy to Greenland.

“Territorial integrity and sovereignty are essential principles of international law. These principles are vital for the EU and countries worldwide. We fully support Denmark and the Greenlandic people,” von der Leyen stated on X.

She emphasized that Arctic security is a high priority for the EU, which aims to collaborate closely with allies and partners.

The United States President, Donald Trump, appointed Jeff Landry as the envoy to Greenland, recognizing the territory’s significance for U.S. national security.

Trump has previously mentioned the importance of Greenland to national security, advocating for its acquisition by the United States.

Landry, the governor of Louisiana, supports the idea of an American takeover, stating, “President Donald J. Trump is correct. We must ensure Greenland becomes part of the United States. It would be beneficial for both sides. Let’s make it happen,” he wrote on X in January.

The renewed U.S. interest in Greenland prompted Denmark to summon its ambassador to the U.S., Ken Howery, for discussions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Prior to this, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) expressed his discontent with Landry’s appointment.

“I am deeply troubled by this appointment and especially the envoy’s remarks, which I find completely unacceptable,” he commented earlier on Monday.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) and Greenland’s leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, have also expressed their concerns regarding the situation.

“National borders and state sovereignty are based on international law. These are fundamental principles. Annexing other countries is not permissible, even with arguments about international security,” they stated in a joint declaration.

Oh, look at the EU flexing its muscles over a chunk of ice – how charming! Maybe next they’ll send a diplomatic envoy to check on how many fish can swim by without a passport! 🐟✈️

  2. Support for Greenland from the EU? Oh, how generous! 🍀 I suppose a few flowery statements will do wonders against a U.S. envoy with big dreams of taking it over. Classic! 😏

Looks like the EU’s taking a break from their usual tea and biscuits to play geopolitical chess over a chunk of ice. 🍦 Next up, a heartfelt letter to Santa about Greenland’s sovereignty—because nothing says “we care” like a diplomatic X on Twitter! 😏

  9. Oh, brilliant! Because nothing screams “let’s protect our sovereignty” like a EU leader tweeting support while the US plays Monopoly with Greenland. 🤦‍♂️ If only there was a board game for international diplomacy, eh?

Looks like the EU’s finally realized Greenland’s not just a pretty iceberg floating around – who knew? 😂 Meanwhile, I guess “support” really means “we’ll send a nice letter while you keep the coffee warm for our pals across the pond.” ☕️

Oh, how charming! Nothing says “we care” quite like an EU leader swooping in after the US shows interest, like a last-minute guest at a dinner party—just hope they brought something better than stale bread! 🍞😂

  12. Ah, nothing says “we care” like an EU leader throwing a lifebuoy to Greenland while the US is trying to play Monopoly. 🙄 Just wait till they start charging rent for those icebergs!

So, the EU’s solidarity with Greenland is like a toddler claiming a toy while the bigger kids are already eyeing it—very brave, but good luck with that! 😂

Looks like the EU’s about as keen on U.S. interest in Greenland as a pub landlord is on an empty pint glass. Cheers to sovereignty, eh? 🍻

So, the EU’s rallying cry for Greenland is like a waiter insisting you need dessert after a five-course meal—utterly charming but a tad late to the party, don’t you think? 🍰🤷‍♂️

So, the EU’s throwing a cozy blanket over Greenland while the US plays Monopoly with it, eh? Makes you wonder if Ursula’s secretly hoping to trade it for a few Brexit biscuits. 🥴
