Stockholm – A special debate regarding the euro is set to take place in the Swedish parliament, initiated by the Liberal Party, which is part of the governing coalition.
“Sweden is at a critical crossroads, both economically and in terms of security policy. With new analyses and arguments emerging, it is essential that we engage in an honest and transparent debate about the euro,” stated Cecilia Rönn, economic policy spokesperson for the Liberal Party, in a press release.
The date for the debate has yet to be determined.
Within the current government coalition, the Liberal Party supports the euro, while the Sweden Democrats oppose it. The Moderate Party and the Christian Democrats advocate for further investigation into the matter.
Sweden is not part of the eurozone. In a referendum held on 14 September 2003, 55.9 percent of voters rejected the adoption of the euro, with 42.0 percent in favor.
