UN Mission in South Sudan Condemns Wau Staff Member Killing, Urges Rapid Investigation

The staff member was arrested by security officers on December 15. UNMISS was in close contact with local authorities, seeking safe release. The Mission received confirmation of his death earlier this week.

“We are devastated by the loss of our colleague,” Anita Kiki Gbeho, head of UNMISS, said in a statement.

“Such killings of United Nations personnel are unacceptable. We call for an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the circumstances of his detention and death and to ensure that justice is served for him and his family. The safety and security of UN personnel must always be respected.”

The Mission extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the victim, describing him as a dedicated member of the United Nations team committed to serving the people of South Sudan.

UNMISS was established in 2011, following the independence of South Sudan, with a mandate to protect civilians, monitor human rights, and support peacebuilding and reconciliation, working closely with communities, government institutions, and civil society.

With more than 17,000 civilians, police, and soldiers deployed across the country, UNMISS operates in some of the most challenging environments, where insecurity and inter-communal violence continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.

Despite these risks, the Mission remains steadfast in its commitment to peace, protection, and accountability.

UNMISS urged national and local authorities to conduct a prompt and transparent investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice in accordance with international and national laws.

Looks like the UN’s latest “team-building exercise” in South Sudan went a bit too far, eh? I mean, who knew a “rapid investigation” could take so long when investigating a murder? 🤔

Looks like the UN’s got a new approach to team-building – nothing like a little assassination to bring everyone together! So much for a peaceful mission, eh? 🤷‍♂️

  3. Another day, another tragic incident in South Sudan—who knew running an international mission would come with such delightful surprises? 🤷‍♂️ Just what we need, more “thorough investigations” to add to the collection of unfulfilled promises.

Looks like the UN’s latest strategy in South Sudan is to hold a ‘how not to get killed’ seminar—because who wouldn’t want a job where staying alive is optional? 😂

Seems like the UN’s a bit late to the party with that “immediate investigation” request—what’s next, a polite letter to the perpetrators? 🙄 Typical bureaucratic charm, innit?

Looks like the UN’s got quite the “welcome committee” in South Sudan. I mean, who knew a job in peacekeeping came with a free ticket to the reaper’s ball? 🕺💼

  7. Looks like UNMISS has quite the knack for finding trouble, eh? Maybe next time they should try sending a postcard instead of personnel! 😏✌️

Right, because yet another call for an investigation will definitely solve the problem in a place where ‘peacekeeping’ seems to be an adventurous guesswork. 🤷‍♂️ Who needs real accountability when you’ve got press releases?

  9. Oh great, another heartfelt statement from the UN. Because nothing says “we care” quite like a stern letter, right? 🙄

Just when you think the UN can’t get any better at sending thoughts and prayers instead of actual solutions, they outdo themselves. 💁‍♂️ Let’s hope their “thorough investigation” doesn’t take longer than my last vacation to the Costa del Sol! 🏖️

  11. Looks like the UN’s latest adventure in South Sudan has turned into a real “how not to win friends and influence people” episode. 🙄 Maybe next time they’ll bring a bit of common sense along with their peacekeeping boots, eh?

Isn’t it just charming how the UN is always so quick to issue heartfelt statements after a tragedy? Maybe next time they’d like to throw in a little more action and less talk—wouldn’t that be a breath of fresh air? 🤔💼

So, another day in paradise, eh? Who knew working for the UN in South Sudan came with such thrilling entertainment options? 🤦‍♂️

  14. Just another day in paradise, eh? The UN calls for an investigation while the locals probably think it’s just another episode of “Who Done It?” in the South Sudanese soap opera. 😂

  15. Just what South Sudan needs, another heartfelt statement from UNMISS—because nothing says “we care” like a press release while the real action is happening elsewhere. 🙄💼
