Vujić and Von Behrat Discuss Enhancing the Rule of Law and Serbia’s EU Accession Process

BELGRADE – Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić met with Ambassador Andreas von Bekerat, the Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, to discuss ongoing judicial reforms, the rule of law, and Serbia’s EU accession activities.

The discussions focused on aligning national legislation with EU standards, enhancing judicial independence, and increasing efficiency and transparency within the judiciary. Vujić reaffirmed the Ministry of Justice and Serbia’s Government commitment to advancing reforms in line with strategic goals and international obligations, alongside EU institutions. He mentioned an upcoming analysis of the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime, which will involve domestic institutions and professional associations, as well as the EU, Council of Europe, and GRECO. The European Commission has already acknowledged this initiative during a Stabilisation and Association Committee meeting. To enhance justice accessibility for citizens, Vujić pointed to potential changes within Belgrade’s judicial network to address European Commission concerns about judicial efficiency.

Von Bekerat highlighted the importance of dialogue and partnership in the justice sector, expressing the EU’s support for Serbia’s reform efforts amid its European integration path. Both parties agreed on the necessity of ongoing communication and collaboration to achieve tangible outcomes in the rule of law. (19 December)

  2. Oh, look at that, Vujić and Von Bekerat having a little chat about the rule of law—how very novel! Next, they’ll discuss the weather while we’re at it, because nothing screams progress like a meeting about meetings. 😏
