In a briefing from Gaza, Antoine Renard informed journalists in New York that despite improved food access since the ceasefire two months ago, Gazans still endure significant hardships. This update followed a UN and partner statement urging the international community to press Israel to remove barriers to humanitarian aid.
Over One Million Fed
The WFP has reached over one million people with food assistance, including food boxes and wheat flour, according to Mr. Renard. In collaboration with UNICEF, more than 300,000 individuals are receiving nutritional support to prevent and address malnutrition. The agency also supports temporary learning spaces with 190,000 kits, distributing high-energy biscuits and fortified protein bars. Mr. Renard noted an improvement in meal frequency, with people now having two meals per day compared to one in July. Further details on nutrition will be provided in the upcoming IPC report on Friday.
Access to Food ‘Not Enough’
Renard emphasized, “Access to food itself is not enough,” pointing to dire living conditions in Gaza, worsened by winter rain and humidity. He highlighted the plight of a mother of five living in a soaked tent, saved only by raising her mattress from the water. Many people are resorting to using trash and wood for cooking.
Overcoming Impediments
To deliver aid, WFP must navigate areas where Israeli Defense Forces are present, such as Jabalia and Beit Lahia. A distribution point was recently established in Beit Lahia. During a UN media briefing, Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq warned that Israel’s new policies, including a contentious NGO registration system, are hindering relief efforts and endangering the humanitarian response.
