Following the European Council summit, Orbán addressed reporters as EU leaders agreed to a €90 billion joint borrowing plan for financial aid to Ukraine.
Hungary, Slovakia, and Czechia opted out of the program to support Kyiv, reinforcing their Ukraine-skeptic alliance and adding to the challenges facing EU unity as leaders failed to consent to utilizing over €200 billion in frozen Russian state assets for Ukraine’s aid.
Before the EU summit on Thursday, Orbán disclosed that Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned him that Moscow would retaliate if the EU used Russian assets to assist Ukraine.
Orbán quoted Putin saying there would be “a strong response using all the instruments of international law, and they will take into account the position of each individual member state of the union.”
“Thus, we Hungarians have safeguarded ourselves,” Orbán remarked.
