Denmark has successfully led a secure EU presidency, achieving numerous outcomes beneficial to both Ukraine and the EU.
This was emphasized by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and António Costa, President of the EU, during the final summit of the Danish EU presidency.
Von der Leyen stated, “I want to commend the Danish presidency for delivering impressive results in just six months.” She noted that 41 cases were concluded, with negotiating mandates achieved for an additional 17 cases.
She pointed out Denmark’s success in securing agreement on both the 18th and 19th sanctions packages against Russia amidst growing challenges due to Hungary’s opposition. Furthermore, Denmark quickly gained a qualified majority among EU countries for a long-term freeze on Russian assets and for reducing reliance on Russian gas.
Coupled with the EU’s new 2040 climate goal targeting a 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gases, these actions will boost renewable energy’s share and enhance the EU’s energy independence, according to von der Leyen.
On the topic of migration, she acknowledged Denmark’s contributions towards initiating legislation on returns and safe countries of origin. Additionally, she praised the presidency for advancing Europe’s defense strategy for 2030 and for simplifying processes benefiting many European companies. Von der Leyen concluded that Denmark has laid a strong foundation for the next EU presidency, highlighting the significance of their leadership and commitment to the EU.
EU President António Costa also recognized Denmark’s achievements during its presidency. “I commend the excellent work undertaken by the Danish EU presidency. Significant progress has been made over the past six months,” he stated, noting advancements in Europe’s defense, the move away from Russian energy, and crucial decisions to enhance the EU’s competitiveness.
