Košta: A larger European Union leads to a safer, stronger, and more peaceful Europe

BRUSSELS – Following the EU-Western Balkans summit, European Council President Antonio Košta emphasized that an expanded European Union represents a safer, stronger, and more peaceful Europe. He stated, “Today’s summit conveyed a clear message – we unequivocally support the Western Balkans’ future within the EU.” Košta outlined three reasons why enlargement is crucial for shared objectives. Firstly, from a geopolitical standpoint, a larger EU enhances safety and stability. Secondly, he noted that previous enlargements have bolstered collective prosperity.

Košta’s third point highlighted that the EU remains a credible and appealing project that must meet the expectations it creates. “Enlargement is progressing more rapidly than it has in the past 15 years, and we must take advantage of this moment. It is a merit-based process, not a competition. Candidates that progress swiftly should not be slowed down but rather inspire others,” he remarked. The President acknowledged significant progress over the last year, particularly noting Montenegro’s accelerated EU journey, with five accession chapters successfully closed recently. He commended Albania for quickly opening all negotiation clusters, with the last one finalized in November. “Next year will be pivotal for them in implementing reforms,” he added. In relation to North Macedonia, he welcomed initiatives to enhance regional connectivity. Regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina, Košta highlighted the adoption of its Reform Agenda, essential for accessing the Growth Plan that will facilitate EU support and gradual integration. “For Kosovo, we appreciate the efforts made to foster community trust,” he stated.

He noted that the upcoming parliamentary elections could be critical for consolidating reforms and promoting constructive engagement on the European accession pathway. Košta recognized that beyond the technical aspects, a crucial political decision lies ahead: to choose between remaining mired in the past or advancing toward a shared EU future, opting for reconciliation and cooperation, which are fundamental to the European Union. “Only by moving past previous conflicts can the Western Balkans fully embrace their potential as future EU members and aid in fostering a stable, prosperous, and united Europe. The journey won’t be easy, as some reforms will be challenging, but they are worthwhile. I have faith that our partners are dedicated to achieving these goals,” concluded the President of the European Council. Košta stressed that enlargement is a profoundly transformative undertaking. “We must sustain this momentum. That’s why we will support our partners at every phase. The EU is, and will continue to be, the most dependable ally of the Western Balkans. They are all part of the European family, and the European Union is their rightful home,” he summed up. A larger EU? Fantastic! Because nothing screams safety and peace like a bureaucratic stampede to add more members to the club. 🥳 Just what we need—more meetings to discuss how to avoid meetings!

  2. Oh sure, because nothing screams “peaceful Europe” like adding a few more countries to the mix—just what we need, right? 🇪🇺💼

Expanding the EU, eh? Just what we need – more bureaucratic paperwork and endless meetings to discuss how to make things ‘safer’ while we sip our lattes in Brussels. 🤔🍵

  5. So, let me get this straight: a bigger EU is the magic wand for peace and prosperity? Must be nice to live in a world where enlargement is just a click away. 😂

Oh sure, because nothing screams “peace and prosperity” like throwing a bunch of countries into a club they didn’t ask to join. 🍻 Just hope the membership fees don’t come with a side of bureaucracy!

So, apparently, expanding the EU is like adding extra cheese to a pizza—who wouldn’t want it, right? 🍕 But let’s hope it doesn’t turn into a cheesy mess along the way! 😏

  10. A larger EU, eh? Just what we need—more countries in the club arguing over who brings the best wine to the meetings. 🍷 Let’s hope they’ve sorted out the snack situation too, or it’s going to be a long summit! 😏

So, according to Mr. Košta, all we need for a peaceful Europe is just a few more countries to join the queue—because who doesn’t love a good game of geopolitical musical chairs? 🎶🍷
