The widespread protests that erupted in November were triggered by a divisive budget proposal that increased taxes on private enterprises while allotting more funds to the state sector — though this budget was merely the catalyst.
The true impetus behind the protests has been a broader discontent with the government as a whole. An initial economic complaint swiftly transformed into a nationwide push for accountability, transparency, and fresh leadership.
“Our aim is to meet the expectations of society. Currently, as the Constitution mandates, power comes from the people’s voice. We acknowledge the voices of citizens protesting against the government,” Zhelyazkov stated.
“People of all ages and diverse ethnic backgrounds have demanded resignation. We support and encourage this civic energy,” he added.
Bulgaria is gearing up to adopt the euro on January 1, with about half the population wary of the transition due to fears of inflation and disinformation disseminated by Russia to undermine public support for the single currency.
