EU Approves Controversial Simplification of Sustainability Regulations

Brussels – EU member states and the European Parliament have reached an agreement on the contentious simplifications of the recent sustainability regulations.

A final deal was secured during late-night negotiations in Brussels on Tuesday.

“This agreement brings a historic cost reduction,” stated Swede Jörgen Warborn (Moderates), who represented the European Parliament in the negotiations, at a press conference.

The accord concerning the CSR and CSDD directives will result in fewer companies needing to report on the conduct of their subcontractors outside the EU regarding issues like environmental standards and labor rights.

These simplifications are part of the European Commission’s effort to cut bureaucracy and enhance competitiveness within the EU. However, they have faced criticism from climate activists and human rights advocates.

Looks like the EU’s idea of “simplification” is just a fancy way of saying, “Let’s give a free pass to the bad apples!” 🍏 Less paperwork for them, more greenwashing for us. Classic, innit? 🤷‍♂️

So, less accountability means more competitiveness, right? Finally, the EU is giving the green light to play “sustainability bingo” while we’re all just here trying to find the “free space” on our conscience. 😂
