2 Police Officers Injured Arresting Drunk Driver in Genk

Genk (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – 2 Genk police officers were slightly injured during a traffic stop on Assebroekstraat. The men in his twenties, driving without a license, were found with alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine; the vehicle was seized.

As VRT News reported, 2 police officers were injured during a traffic stop on Assebroekstraat in Genk. The stop followed reports of a dangerous maneuver by a car in the area. When officers approached the vehicle, they noticed a strong smell of alcohol and cannabis inside. The 2 men in the car, both in their twenties, appeared heavily under the influence and gave only slow, unclear answers to questions from the police. 

What happened when 2 Genk police officers arrested a drunk, unlicensed driver?

Police found a small bag of cocaine. Police also discovered that the driver was not licensed to drive. Police in Genk try to arrest the men. The driver became aggressive during the attempt. 2 officers were slightly injured while trying to control the situation. 

After being questioned, the men were released by the police, but the vehicle was seized at the request of the public prosecutor’s office. The prosecutor’s office is now carrying out further investigations into the case. 

Similar incidents have happened in Belgium before. In 2021, police in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean were attacked during a traffic stop, and 5 officers were injured when a driver became aggressive. In 2022, a driver in Theux struck an officer with his car after refusing to stop at a checkpoint. In March 2024, a driver fleeing a traffic stop in Limburg rammed police vehicles, injuring 2 officers before being arrested in Germany.
