Ljubljana – In a conversation held in Ljubljana, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos and Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob emphasized the obstacles faced in EU enlargement and security. Golob asserted that democracy should not be sacrificed for security, advocating for the reduction of populists’ influence through the elimination of fear. Kos highlighted the threat posed by external destructive forces, with both leaders agreeing on the importance of upholding liberal values.
During the discussion on EU enlargement as a geopolitical imperative, organized by Slovenia’s largest ruling party Svoboda, Kos and Golob underscored the challenges to European values. Kos pointed out the reality of confronting autocrats aiming to undermine or even dismantle the EU. She noted that for the first time, enlargement is not just between the EU and candidate countries, but also involves external forces intent on thwarting progress.
With the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Slovenia in mind, both leaders addressed the issue of cyber threats, recalling instances of foreign interference in domestic politics. Golob indicated that Slovenia could expect similar attempts in the near future, stressing the importance of societal awareness and response to such challenges.
Kos expressed worries that autocrats are manipulating democratic ideals to erode democracy itself. She emphasized the necessity of adequately preparing candidate countries for EU membership to safeguard these values, asserting that the EU should only accept members that contribute to its strength.
Golob concurred, stating that the primary concern is not economic self-interest but rather security. He underscored the need to maintain democracy, which populists aim to disrupt by fostering fear.
He assessed that a key challenge is creating a Europe with a robust defense mechanism capable of eliminating “populists, autocrats, and those opposed to European ideals.” Kos further posited that the EU must contemplate its strategy to evolve into a superpower with a different approach, emphasizing the necessity of steadfastness in liberal values.
