Syria: Steps Taken to Strengthen Human Rights Since Assad’s Fall Are ‘Just the Beginning’

OHCHR urges increased efforts to halt violence and achieve justice.

“Although the interim authorities have begun to address past violations, much more needs to be done,” spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheethan informed journalists in Geneva.

Summary executions and arbitrary killings

Since December, Syria’s interim authorities have created national commissions for transitional justice and missing persons, among other initiatives.

A draft law on transitional justice has been proposed, with trials commencing regarding the deadly coastal violence in March.

“However, reports of summary executions, arbitrary killings, and abductions persist, primarily targeting certain communities and those associated with the former government,” he noted.

Minorities affected

Hundreds have died in the past year due to security forces, affiliated groups, former government elements, local armed groups, and unidentified individuals.

Other violations include sexual violence, arbitrary detentions, home destruction, forced evictions, and restrictions on expression and assembly.

Alawite, Druze, Christian, and Bedouin communities have been largely affected, with violence fueled by rising hate speech both online and offline.

Incursions by Israeli forces

“The past year saw repeated Israeli military actions, including incursions and further territorial occupation,” Mr. Al-Kheethan added.

OHCHR has received reports of civilian casualties, arrests, and home searches.

He mentioned that the integration of former armed groups into Syria’s new security forces lacks adequate human rights vetting.

Proper vetting is vital to prevent serious violators from joining and to avert further violations.

Accountability essential for Syria’s transition

“All violations, past and present, must be independently and transparently investigated, and those responsible held accountable,” he stated.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has urged authorities to address the root causes of violations.

He emphasized that accountability, justice, peace, and security for all Syrians are essential for a successful transition.

Looks like the interim authorities are really rolling up their sleeves to tackle human rights, one summary execution at a time. At this rate, they’ll have a thriving justice system by the next millennium! 😂

Looks like they’re really on the ball with their “just the beginning” approach to human rights in Syria—it’s like saying a broken clock is right twice a day, innit? 🤷‍♂️

  3. Seems like we’re off to a spectacular start in Syria, where addressing human rights is akin to putting a fresh coat of paint on a sinking ship. 🎨🚢 Just the beginning, right? More like the beginning of a very long, convoluted story.

  4. Looks like “steps” in Syria are more like baby steps, eh? At this rate, I’d suggest they invest in a really good pair of walking shoes if they plan to run towards human rights anytime soon. 😏

Looks like they’ve really outdone themselves this time – who knew “just the beginning” could mean so many more years of chaos? 🥴 Don’t worry, I’m sure justice will be served… eventually. 🍷

Seems like Syria’s new human rights plan is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Hope they don’t expect a round of applause for just starting to address the mess they’ve been sitting in! 🍫☕️

Oh, fantastic, just the beginning of “progress” in Syria—next stop, a five-star resort for human rights! Who knew solving decades of conflict could be done over a cup of coffee and a draft law? ☕️😏

You know, it’s refreshing to see that after years of chaos, the interim authorities are finally addressing human rights—like giving a Band-Aid to a gaping wound. Just the beginning, eh? Maybe next they’ll tackle the weather in a similar fashion! 😏✈️

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a fresh batch of transitional justice in Syria – it’s like painting your nails while the house is on fire. At this rate, we might need a new definition for “just the beginning” – maybe something like “please hold your applause”? 🙄

Seems like the new interim crew in Syria is really on the ball with their “just the beginning” approach to human rights—it’s almost as if they think a few commissions will fix decades of chaos. 🤷‍♂️ If only justice could be as easy as throwing together a draft law over a cup of coffee! ☕️

Oh brilliant, more bureaucratic steps in the land of “we’ll get to it eventually.” Just what we needed, a draft law to discuss a draft law while the actual problems are still throwing wild parties, innit? 😏

Just the beginning, eh? Sounds like someone’s been sipping too much espresso while dreaming of a human rights utopia – maybe they should start with a proper coffee first! ☕️😏

Looks like the interim authorities are really getting their act together—creating commissions while the summary executions keep rolling in. 🎭 It’s a bit like putting a fancy label on a bottle of vinegar, innit?

Seems like they’ve got a real handle on things there, huh? Just a bit of summary executions and arbitrary killings to spice up the human rights agenda—what a refreshing change! 😏

  17. Looks like Syria’s interim authorities are playing a game of “let’s pretend everything’s fine” while summary executions and arbitrary killings are still on the menu. 🍽️ Just the beginning, eh? More like the endless loop of déjà vu. 🙄

So, the interim authorities think creating a few commissions will magically erase years of chaos? Brilliant strategy, lads! Just what Syria needs—more paperwork! 😏✍️

Looks like the efforts to strengthen human rights in Syria are as effective as a chocolate teapot—great idea in theory, but a right mess in practice! 🍫☕️
