East Flanders Pledges €5 Million for Ghent Saint Bavo’s Cathedral

Ghent (Eurotoday Newspaper) – Saint Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent needs urgent repairs, including roof and oak rot. East Flanders pledged €5 million; total cost €11–15 million. Geert De Cubber urges full funding, and Moens seeks Flemish support.

As VRT News reported, Saint Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent is facing serious repair needs. They mentioned that the roof is in poor condition. The Province of East Flanders has announced it will provide €5 million in its multi-year budget for the renovation. This is the first official funding commitment for the work. Experts say the full restoration will cost between €11 million and €15 million.

“In several places, the slats have sagged or disappeared. Rain can penetrate, leading to rot or biological damage to the structure,”

says Provincial Executive Kurt Mons (N-VA) in response to a question from party colleague Elke Sleurs.

“There is damage, and oak rot is already visible. The report by Monumentenwacht and Bressers Architects is quite clear.”

“The report is clear: there are damages and oak wood fungus can be seen.”

Deputy Kurt Moens (N-VA)

What will cover the full cost of Saint Bavo’s Cathedral renovation?

Geert De Cubber of the Diocese of Ghent welcomed the funding from the Province of East Flanders for Saint Bavo’s Cathedral.

“We are pleased with this initial commitment,”

he said. He also stressed that the renovation cannot start yet because not all the money has been secured.

“We haven’t yet secured all the funds needed to begin the renovation, so we’re continuing to consult with the other partners,”

De Cubber explained. He confirmed that the cathedral’s condition is worrying.

“It would be great if the work weren’t delayed,”

he added.

The province is now looking to the Flemish government for further support.

“We cannot bear the costs of the complete renovation. We expect Flanders to take responsibility for this. Starting next year, there will be a call for large-scale renovation projects. We assume that Saint Bavo’s Cathedral will be eligible,”

Moens concludes.

Saint Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent has a history that goes back to the 7th century, when a small wooden chapel first stood on the site. In 942, a chapter of canons was created, and the building of the current Gothic cathedral began in the 14th century. Construction continued for

  1. Oh, €5 million for a roof that’s about as watertight as a sieve? At this rate, we might just need a “Build-A-Cathedral” workshop for the leftover change! 😂💸

Oh, great, €5 million for a roof that’s more of a sieve than a shelter—just what every medieval masterpiece needs, right? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe we should just invite the rain for a cozy chat inside instead!

So, €5 million for a roof that’s about as reliable as a Belgian train schedule? They better hope the rain holds off until they sort out those oak rot issues! 😂💸

  4. €5 million for a leaky roof? At this rate, they might as well just put up a “For Sale” sign next to the cathedral! 🏰💸

Oh, brilliant! A mere €5 million for a cathedral that’s practically begging for a miracle—at this rate, we should just slap a “Caution: Roof May Collapse” sign on it and call it a day! 😂

Oh, great, €5 million for a roof that’s more of a sieve than a shelter—just what we needed, a fancy bucket for the rain! 🏰💦 Hope the Flemish government steps up, or we’ll be hosting services with umbrellas! ☔️

Oh, marvellous! Nothing says “let’s fix the roof” like a €5 million pledge when the bill is likely to hit €15 million. I guess the rest will just “magically” appear, eh? 😂

Oh splendid, €5 million for a roof that’s probably more ‘leaky’ than my last taxi! Let’s hope the Flemish government doesn’t splurge on a holiday instead of chipping in for a proper fix. 😏

So, let me get this straight: €5 million for a roof that’s basically auditioning for a horror movie? Hope the Flemish government has some deep pockets, or we’ll need a crowdfund for a miracle! 😂💸

Oh, just €5 million for a church that’s basically a sponge now—what a steal! At this rate, they’ll have it fixed up just in time for the next millennium. 😏💰

Oh sure, let’s toss €5 million at a cathedral while the roof’s about to collapse—because who wouldn’t want to fund a medieval fixer-upper? 🤷‍♂️ Just a casual €10 million short, but hey, priorities, right?
