The EU has been implementing a series of “omnibus” packages on topics like business supply chains, agriculture funding, and migration, which have emerged with minimal consultation. The EU ombudsman criticized the Commission’s procedural shortcomings in proposing these measures, describing them as “maladministration.”
Ribera, second in rank at the EU executive after its German president, admitted in a keynote speech the need to avoid duplication, align procedures, expedite processes, and offer businesses more clarity. However, she cautioned against excessive deregulation.
“Deregulation removes safeguards, places costs on citizens and taxpayers, creates uncertainty, and deters investment,” she stated at a Bruegel event.
“It’s a Trumpist method against stability, reliability, and predictability. It undermines our standards, reduces the credibility of the single market, and increases inequalities and distortions.”
Von der Leyen advocated for deregulation in a speech last month in Copenhagen.
“When we consider simplification, we all concur that we need simplification, we need deregulation,” she expressed.
