EU Funds Misuse: Federica Mogherini Charged

Brussels – Federica Mogherini, along with two other suspects arrested on Tuesday in Brussels, has been formally charged following a day of police questioning, as announced by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday.

The other suspects include Stefano Sannino, a high-ranking official with the European Commission, and Cesare Zegretti, co-director of the College of Europe responsible for training and projects, according to a source familiar with the situation who spoke to AFP. All three individuals were released under certain conditions late Tuesday night into Wednesday.

The inquiry revolves around allegations of favoritism and unfair competition related to the awarding of a training program for future diplomats by the EU diplomatic service (EEAS) to this institution during 2021–22, a program previously overseen by Ms. Mogherini from 2014 to 2019.

On Wednesday afternoon, Federica Mogherini asserted that the College of Europe has consistently upheld “the highest standards of integrity and fairness,” particularly when it initiated the Diplomatic Academy of the Union three years ago, which is central to the investigation. (3 December 2025)

  1. Looks like the EU’s got a real talent for picking its top brass, eh? They should consider a career in reality TV instead of politics—at least then we’d get some decent drama! 😂

Seems like the EU’s idea of “training future diplomats” includes a crash course in dodgy dealings. Who knew integrity was just a fancy word for “let’s play favorites”? 😂

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed – our esteemed EU officials putting the “fun” in “funds misuse”! 🍷 Can’t wait to see how they spin this one at the next summit.

Oh, just another day in Brussels where integrity is as common as a sunny day in London. 🤷‍♂️ Who knew training future diplomats involved such…creative interpretations of fairness?

Looks like the EU funds are being put to better use than I thought – who knew they were just for a little game of “who can be the dodgiest?” 😂 Honestly, what’s next, a masterclass in integrity from the College of Europe?

  6. Just what we needed, more “high standards” from our European leaders—looks like the only training they’ve mastered is how to dodge responsibility. 🤷‍♂️💼

  7. Just what we needed, more drama in the EU circus! 🎭 Seems like the only thing getting trained here is the art of dodging responsibility, eh? 😂

Oh, splendid! Just what we needed – another EU official showing us how to juggle integrity while dodging charges. Who knew diplomacy came with such a side of drama? 😂

  9. Looks like the EU’s finest are on an all-expenses-paid trip to the interrogation room! Maybe they thought “integrity” was just a trendy word for their next marketing campaign. 😂

Looks like the EU’s got a new talent show: “Who Misuses Funds Better?” 🎭 Honestly, if they put half as much effort into being legit as they do into these scandals, we might actually get something done around here! 😏

Just what we needed—another EU official in hot water! I suppose “transparency” is just a fancy word for “whoops, we did it again,” eh? 😂

Honestly, who knew that handing out diplomas could be such a dangerous game? 🤷‍♂️ Next thing you know, they’ll be charging them for not using the right shade of blue in their PowerPoints! 😂

Oh great, just what we needed—another riveting episode of “How to Misuse EU Funds.” Bravo, Federica! 👏 At this rate, I might just start charging for tickets to the next political circus! 🎪
