EU urges release of detainees in Guinea-Bissau

Brussels – The European Union (EU) has today urged the immediate release of all individuals detained in Guinea-Bissau and called for a prompt restoration of constitutional order following the military coup that occurred on Wednesday.
“We emphasize the necessity of freeing all detainees,” stated Anouar El Anouni, spokesperson for the European Commission for Foreign Affairs.
“We acknowledge the release yesterday [Thursday] of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló,” the spokesperson continued.
Embaló, who was removed from power by a military coup on Wednesday, was released and taken to Senegal on Thursday.
El Anouni reiterated the call for “a rapid return to constitutional order and the resumption of the electoral process.”
The EU advocates for the completion of the vote counting process and encourages acceptance of the election results by all parties involved.
The military junta that has assumed control in Guinea-Bissau appointed General Horta Inta-A as transitional President for one year.
The military had declared the suspension of the electoral process just before the results of the general elections held on November 23 were to be announced.
The elections, which proceeded without reported incidents, took place without the participation of the main opposition party, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), and its candidate, Domingos Simões Pereira, who were excluded from the electoral process and detained in the meantime, with Pereira expressing support for opposing candidate Fernando Dias da Costa.
The opposition, claiming victory in the presidential elections, accuses the military intervention of being a tactic orchestrated by the outgoing President to obstruct the announcement of electoral results. (28/11/25)

  1. Seems like the EU has found a new hobby in urging the release of detainees; perhaps they should take up knitting instead. 🎉 Nothing says “we care” like a strongly worded statement while the real action is happening elsewhere! 🤷‍♂️

Isn’t it charming how the EU thinks a polite nudge will magically restore democracy in Guinea-Bissau? I mean, who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned coup followed by a dash of constitutional order? 😏

Oh, brilliant move, EU! Just what we need – another round of diplomatic hand-wringing while the real action happens on the ground. 🥴 Bet those military folks are quaking in their boots at your “urgent” requests!

Looks like the EU’s got their hands full, urging for a quick return to democracy in Guinea-Bissau. I mean, nothing screams “constitutional order” like a military coup and a new president named General Horta Inta-A, right? 🤷‍♂️

Looks like the EU is really flexing its muscles with a heartfelt plea for detainees in Guinea-Bissau—because nothing says “we care” like a strongly worded letter from Brussels! 😂✉️

Looks like the EU’s latest power move is to “urge” a bunch of military coup leaders in Guinea-Bissau—because nothing says respect like a polite suggestion, right? 😂 Let’s just hope their next advisory isn’t about how to bake a cake while the kitchen’s on fire! 🍰🔥

Looks like the EU’s newfound hobby is issuing sternly worded letters—very effective, innit? 😂 Meanwhile, Guinea-Bissau might need a stronger dose of constitutional order than just a polite reminder!

  8. Looks like the EU’s got a new hobby—playing “release the prisoners” while sipping espresso in Brussels. Hope they packed their patience, ’cause it seems like constitutional order is on a permanent holiday! 😂🛩️

Seems like the EU is really getting into the spirit of free speech, eh? Next, they’ll be urging the release of the roast chicken from the oven—because, you know, it’s all about that timely restoration of ‘order’! 😂

Oh, brilliant move by the EU—because nothing says “we care” like a heartfelt plea for detainees while sipping espresso in Brussels. 🙄 Let’s just hope the military junta takes a break from their busy schedule of power grabs to consider human rights and democracy, shall we?

  11. Releasing detainees? How generous of the EU to lend a hand – maybe next they’ll offer them a nice cuppa while they’re at it. ☕️

  12. Oh sure, because nothing says “we care” quite like a polite letter from Brussels while the entire country is doing the cha-cha with a military junta. 🇪🇺🕺 Who needs constitutional order when you can have a year-long dance with a general?

Looks like the EU’s really cracking the whip this time! I mean, who knew a military coup could be so inconvenient for everyone’s coffee break agenda? ☕️😏

  14. Seems like the EU’s got a keen interest in the goings-on in Guinea-Bissau—who knew they were such fans of political soap operas? 🍿 “Release the detainees!” they say, like a well-meaning uncle at a family reunion, blissfully unaware that the show’s just getting started.

  15. Another day, another military coup in Guinea-Bissau—just what the EU ordered! 😏 I suppose “immediate release” is just a fancy way of saying “let’s wait and see, shall we?” 🍷

Looks like the EU is on a roll again, pressing the pause button on democracy while playing a game of ‘who can shout louder’ – maybe they think it’s a football match? 🤷‍♂️⚽️
