Rachel Reeves: UK Budget Isn’t My Obituary

Conservative critics accused her of initiating a welfare increase, financed by raising taxes on working individuals.

During the traditional post-budget morning broadcast, Reeves asserted that her political legacy would not involve an expansive welfare system, despite the rise in social security spending during this parliament.

“Many people have attempted to dismiss me over the last 16 months,” Reeves told Times Radio. “You’re not going to end my career today. There’s much more I aim to do to stimulate our economy and improve the lives of working people.”

Reeves later informed Sky News that working individuals had been asked to “contribute a bit more,” but they would gain from lower energy bills and a freeze on train fares and prescription charges.

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) on Wednesday projected a real GDP growth of 1.5 percent for 2025, an increase of 0.5 percentage points from its March forecast. However, its growth outlook for later years has been reduced.

“I have surpassed the predictions this year,” Reeves stated. “I plan to exceed those forecasts next year and the year following.”

  1. Blimey, sounds like Rachel’s on a mission to redefine welfare as a trendy new accessory for the working class! But hey, who needs lower energy bills when you can just pay more taxes? 😂

  2. Blimey, sounds like Rachel’s plotting a budget revolution while juggling a tax hike—next, she’ll be selling us the idea that rain’s just a sprinkle of free market magic! 🇬🇧💷

Oh, splendid! Nothing says “I care about the working class” quite like raising their taxes while promising them lower energy bills. 🤑 Just what we need, more “contributions” from the folks who can barely pay their bills!

  4. Oh, splendid! Who knew raising taxes to fund welfare could be so uplifting? 🤷‍♂️ Can’t wait to see how the “contributions” from hard workers will magically transform into lower energy bills—what a dazzling sleight of hand, eh? 💷✨

  5. Blimey, Rachel’s got a real flair for dodging the critics, hasn’t she? Taxing the workers for a ‘brighter’ future while promising lower bills is like saying the sun will shine brighter when it rains! ☔️💰

Oh, brilliant! A budget that’s not an obituary—who knew that raising taxes could be a real crowd-pleaser? 🤷‍♂️ Just what we needed, more contributions from the overworked to fund the magic of lower energy bills and frozen train fares. Cheers to that! 🍻

  7. Oh, brilliant, a budget that sounds like a tax hike in disguise and a fairy tale of growth—who needs a crystal ball when you’ve got Rachel’s optimism, eh? 😏 Just what we need: more contributions from the hard-working folk while we wait for those energy bills to magically disappear!
