Blanár, Barrot, and Dutertre Discuss Shared Challenges for France and Slovakia in the EU

Bratislava/Paris – On Tuesday, Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) met in France with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Presidential Advisor on European Affairs Alexis Dutertre. They discussed shared challenges faced by France and Slovakia within the EU. This information was provided by the communication department of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs.

During the meeting, Juraj Blanár highlighted the strategic partnership between Slovakia and France, established in 2008 under Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD).

“This partnership is realized through five-year action plans, allowing us to assess cooperation across national, regional, and municipal levels,” Blanár noted. According to the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs, France is among Slovakia’s most important trading partners in the EU, with an annual foreign trade turnover of 7.8 billion euros.

France and Slovakia face common challenges in the automotive industry and nuclear energy in the EU

Blanár stated that both nations must confront several common challenges within the EU, particularly in the automotive sector. He mentioned that Stellantis, a French investment in Slovakia, is dealing with similar issues as other automotive manufacturers. “Slovakia is addressing these challenges at the EU level and advocating for our interests simultaneously,” Blanár added.

He also noted that Slovakia is the second largest producer of electricity from nuclear power plants after France. Blanár emphasized the opportunities for both countries to share knowledge and build on past cooperation to further advance in economic, investment, EU, and North Atlantic Alliance activities, as well as in education.

The ministers also discussed other foreign policy topics, including energy, the EU’s declining competitiveness, and the new European budget.

In Paris, Blanár also met with Alexis Dutertre, where they talked about European issues, the war in Ukraine, including the peace initiative by American President Donald Trump, energy, transatlantic relations, and defense and security matters. (October 29)

Oh joy, yet another meeting of the minds where everyone agrees that tackling the monumental challenges of the EU is best done over a croissant and a coffee ☕. I can hardly contain my excitement for their next five-year action plan—because surely that’s what the automotive industry needs, more plans and less action! 😂
