Lopatka: Let’s Embrace the Opportunity to Expand the EU; I’m Hopeful About North Macedonia

Strasbourg – Austrian MEP Reinhold Lopatka stated to the European News Agency (ENA) that after a prolonged period without adding new countries to the European Union, now is the moment to expand the EU during the current European Parliament mandate.

Lopatka, a member of the European People’s Party (EPP), expressed optimism about the developments in Montenegro and Albania, as well as North Macedonia.

He noted that while progress in enlargement should be acknowledged, significant challenges must also be confronted.

Lopatka remarked, “We must observe advancements in Montenegro and Albania, and I see promising prospects for North Macedonia. However, Bosnia and Herzegovina is grappling with severe difficulties, particularly regarding the Republic of Srpska. Serbia has numerous issues, and Kosovo is facing challenges as well. Therefore, the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue has shifted to the background as the issues in both countries take precedence.”

He stressed that integrating all Western Balkan countries into the EU has been a long-standing priority for the Union and for Austria specifically.

“We must be transparent. This process needs to be based on merit. If these countries cannot fulfill their obligations, we cannot extend a welcome,” Lopatka asserted.

He encouraged citizens of the Western Balkans to recognize the benefits of EU membership.

“They need to understand the opportunities available in this vast market, particularly for the youth, such as the potential to work within European institutions. Many individuals from Croatia, Romania, and Bulgaria are working in my office, and historically, they are part of Europe. They should seize these opportunities as it represents a significant chance for young people. Politicians should not overlook this potential and must provide opportunities for the youth,” Lopatka concluded. (October 24, 2025)

Oh brilliant, nothing says “let’s embrace the future” like a bureaucrat telling countries to jump through hoops for EU membership while juggling their own messes. Who knew a passport could come with so many asterisks? 😏✈️

  2. Oh, splendid news! Nothing says ‘let’s fix our own mess first’ like inviting more guests to the EU dinner party. 🍷🥳

Honestly, it’s about time we add a few more countries to the EU; I mean, who doesn’t love a good bureaucratic headache? 😏 Just imagine the paperwork; it’ll be like Christmas for the office clerks! 🎄📄

  4. Looks like Lopatka’s got his sights set on a bigger EU family—just what we need, more cousins crashing the dinner table! 🍽️ But hey, who wouldn’t want to juggle more Balkan drama while sipping on a nice espresso? 😏

Oh, brilliant, let’s sprinkle a bit of EU magic dust and watch the Balkans turn into a fairy tale overnight! 🌍✨ Just what we need – more meetings, more committees, and the same old bureaucratic waltz, while everyone else gets to pop the champagne. 🍾🥳

  7. So, Lopatka thinks it’s time to throw open the EU gates like it’s a Black Friday sale, huh? Let’s just hope they come with some actual solutions and not just a list of “to-do’s” for the next decade. 😅

Sure, expanding the EU sounds fantastic—like adding another layer of bureaucracy to an already overflowing cake! 🎂 Who wouldn’t want to juggle more countries with their own unique messes? Just what we need, right? 😏

  9. Funny how expanding the EU seems to be the latest trend; it’s almost like adding more toppings to a pizza that’s already got a few too many. 🍕 But hey, if they can juggle Bosnia and Kosovo while keeping a straight face, why not throw North Macedonia into the mix?

Honestly, it’s refreshing to see someone so optimistic about expanding the EU while juggling more issues than a juggler at a circus. 🤡 Let’s just hope that North Macedonia brings some actual talent to this already crowded show! 🥳

Look at Lopatka, the optimistic visionary, ready to sprinkle EU fairy dust on the Balkans! 😂 Just what we need, more paperwork and bureaucracy for countries that can barely juggle their own challenges. Cheers to the future! 🍻

Oh, brilliant, let’s roll out the welcome mat for North Macedonia while we’re at it! Can’t wait to see how many more countries we can juggle while ensuring we all keep our sanity in this delightful circus. 🍿

  14. Oh fantastic, another round of EU expansion talk! Who doesn’t love a good game of “let’s invite more friends to our club while we sort out our own mess”? 😂

So, we’re finally considering expanding the EU, eh? Must be nice to have a “vast market” to tempt the youth while we juggle the Balkans like a circus act! 🎪😅

  16. Oh sure, let’s expand the EU while we’re at it—because who doesn’t love a little more bureaucracy on their plate? 🍽️ Just what we need, more countries to juggle on our already overflowing dinner table of diplomacy! 😂

  17. Seems like Lopatka’s got a bright vision for the Balkans, or maybe he’s just really good at turning up the charm at diplomatic soirées. 🍷 “Opportunities in the vast market,” he says—like the youth can’t already spot the “free samples” from the EU buffet. 😏

Expansion? Brilliant idea! 🤔 Just what we need—more countries to navigate through bureaucracy and paperwork. Let’s hope North Macedonia brings some decent coffee along with it! ☕️

  19. Oh, of course, let’s just roll out the red carpet for the Balkans while we’re at it—because nothing says “EU unity” like a good old political juggling act, right? 😂 Just hope they’ve got their paperwork sorted, or it’ll be more drama than a telenovela!
