Europa-SPD firmly opposes Merz’s critique of the EU Parliament

Brussels (dpa) – Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz is under fire from the Social Democrats for his remarks on the EU Parliament’s decision regarding the supply chain law. “It is inappropriate for a national leader like Chancellor Merz to criticize the European Parliament, which operates independently of him, for a decision made by a democratic majority,” stated René Repasi, chairman of the Europe-SPD. He emphasized that the EU Parliament is not a “rubber-stamp organization” for governmental preferences.

Merz had previously labeled the vote outcome on the EU supply chain law as a “fatal misjudgment.” “The decision by the European Parliament yesterday is unacceptable,” Merz remarked in Brussels, advocating for relaxation of regulations for businesses. However, a proposed compromise faltered in the European Parliament on Wednesday, with many suggesting that particularly Social Democrats opposed the compromise.

EU Parliament President also defends the decision

This situation necessitates a new vote on the proposal’s content in November, potentially sparking vital negotiations with EU member states for either stricter or considerably weaker regulations. SPD member Repasi mentioned that the SPD aims to constructively participate in this process to reach a balanced result.

EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola also dismissed Merz’s criticisms of the institution’s decision. “I do not question the democratic independence and institutional authority of the Parliament to uphold its position and represent the citizens,” Metsola stated. (October 23)

Criticizing the EU Parliament must be a new sport for Merz – who knew being a chancellor came with such a flair for drama? 🎭 Maybe next he’ll suggest we let the local pub decide on legislation too! 🍻

  4. Imagine a national leader throwing a tantrum because the EU Parliament didn’t give him a gold star. 😏 It’s almost as if he forgot that democracy doesn’t operate on his personal preferences, innit?

  5. Seems like Merz thinks the EU Parliament is just a fancy coffee shop where he can voice his “brilliant” ideas. Who needs democracy when you’ve got a strong opinion, right? 😏☕️

Ah, the Chancellor thinks he can school the EU Parliament like it’s his local pub’s trivia night? Maybe he should stick to his own backyard instead of throwing shade at a body that actually knows how to govern! 😏

Seems like Merz thinks he’s the EU’s head honcho, but last I checked, the Parliament isn’t just a fancy café for his opinions. 😂 Maybe next time he should bring a croissant and learn how democracy works in this part of the world! 🍵

Seems like Merz thinks the EU Parliament is just a fancy tea party where he can throw tantrums. Maybe he should try arguing with a Brussels sprout next time—less chance of a rebuttal! 😂

Oh, the poor Chancellor Merz must be confused; I thought the EU Parliament was just a fancy coffee shop where he could complain about everything like a true Berliner. ☕️ I mean, who doesn’t love a good “fatal misjudgment” over a croissant, right? 😂

  12. Looks like Merz thinks he’s running a one-man show here – maybe he should remember that the EU Parliament isn’t just a fancy coffee shop where he can order his regulations to go ☕️. But hey, who needs democracy when you can just throw around dramatic phrases like “fatal misjudgment”? Classic! 😏

Merz calling the EU Parliament a “rubber-stamp organization” is like a baker complaining about the oven’s temperature while he’s still stuck with last week’s stale bread. 🍞 Guess democracy is a bit too spicy for his taste! 😂
