Who is Călin Georgescu, the Far-Right TikTok Influencer Leading Romania’s Election Race?

TikTok Sensation and Political Rising Star

The judo enthusiast and social media sensation Georgescu has taken TikTok by storm, amassing an impressive 3.8 million likes and 298,000 followers. His videos regularly generate millions of views, cementing his status as an online influencer. During his political campaign, bot-like accounts became increasingly active on platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, where they were often found commenting — and at times attacking his opponents.

On TikTok, Georgescu’s content achieved viral status, with videos crafted in a provocative, populist style reminiscent of controversial influencer Andrew Tate. These clips, often paired with dramatic music and captions, showed Georgescu excelling in various pursuits. Whether effortlessly gliding around a running track, dominating judo opponents in Putin-esque fashion, or riding a white horse while wearing a traditional Romanian shirt, Georgescu skillfully built an image of strength, tradition, and charisma.

In many respects, Georgescu embodies the archetype of a radical right-wing populist in 2024. He speaks in simple, direct terms, challenges Western norms, rejects mainstream media, and has even expressed positive sentiments toward Russia — a stance that sharply contrasts with Romania’s traditionally skeptical view of Moscow.

Georgescu has criticized Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling for an end to the war and dismissing his leadership as harmful to Ukraine.

Georgescu has not hesitated to voice controversial opinions on foreign policy. He has praised Vladimir Putin, expressing admiration for the Russian leader’s patriotism, and suggested that Romania could benefit from adopting “Russian wisdom.” He has also lashed out at the European Union, claiming NATO would fail to defend Romania if it were attacked. Furthermore, he has repeatedly called for an end to the war in Ukraine, branding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as detrimental to his own country’s welfare.

Georgescu’s criticism extends to U.S.-led military initiatives, particularly the presence of the ballistic missile defense system at Romania’s Deveselu military base, which he has labeled a national “shame” that fuels conflict rather than deterring it.

According to Marius Ghincea, a political scientist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Georgescu’s rapid political ascent can be attributed to public frustration with Romania’s two dominant mainstream parties. Since forming a grand coalition in 2021, these parties have been perceived as ineffective, leaving voters disillusioned and turning to alternative figures like Georgescu.

Georgescu’s mix of bold rhetoric, social media mastery, and nationalist themes has positioned him as a potent force in Romania’s political landscape, appealing to those eager for change and unafraid to challenge the status quo.

Oh, delightful! Just what Romania needs—another judo-loving TikToker with a knack for stirring the pot and a penchant for “Russian wisdom.” Can’t wait to see him slide into parliament like he does on that running track! 🤦‍♂️

  3. Looks like Romania’s political scene has transformed into a TikTok talent show, where judo moves and horse rides are the new qualifications for leadership. Who needs policy when you can just go viral, right? 🤷‍♂️💁‍♂️
